This strategic partnership between the two leading companies in their respective fields aims to provide quality educational content for digital effects enthusiasts on the Web.

As part of the on-going partnership, CGNetworks will provide the technological infrastructure for Gnomon Online, the online educational community for high-end digital production run by Gnomon at http://www.gnomononline.com. Videos tutorials, lectures and other training material from Gnomon will be delivered through the CGNetworks website at http://www.cgnetworks.com starting in July 2003.

This is awesome!

Will these tutorials and lectures be released for a wide variety of apps? Or will it be centered around just one?

The aim for the material on CGNetworks.com is to be as generic as possible. We want to tackle the more fundamental stuff, rather than the software-specific.

Hope that clarifies it.

Best

Glad to hear that, I was worried for a moment there that this was going to be Maya only.

The aim for the material on CGNetworks.com is to be as generic as possible. We want to tackle the more fundamental stuff, rather than the software-specific. I've been a lurker for a long time but this is something nice to see. I am curious though, will there be a lot of content or is it more aimed at giving a little slice of the training to entice more people to pay for the training on gnomons site? Although gnomon has some nice content it is still pretty expensive for those not already in the industry, who are the ones who would most need the actual training heh.

It's also very nice to see the spirit of generousity that Jason Busby has shown at 3dbuzz is really starting to influence the rest of the community. It was pretty much impossible to find high quality, professional level training (besides a few short vids here and there) that were cheap, not alone free before 3dbuzz. Now it seems you can really find them everywhere and that is really a very cool thing for the creative community as a whole. We need to foster our own and with sites like 3dbuzz and now cgnetworks (among many others now) providing real education we are seeing a real difference.

Can't wait to see what you guys have in mind and get started on more learning.

PS are you going to be sending out cd's for those that have slow connections since this is going to be aimed on a global scale? Also, be sure to put up a donation link when it "goes live" so people who want to help out with bandwidth cost and such can jump in ;)

Hi Jester,

Again, this comes down to pure economics. We'll do what we can to give quality material given our limitations, but it will never be as good as paying for training and getting the real deal. We're not doing it to 'entice' people, but just offer something that's of value to the community.

Cool?

Maybe I skimmed over it in the above article, but I didn't see anything that said that this service was going to be free. Am I missing something?

Whether it's free or not, it sounds really cool. Great idea, guys.

I think it would be intensely cool to see some coverage of the ID class that Feng teaches over there in addition to the purely cg related stuff. Solid design skills are the fundamentals of fundamentals.

symantix - As mentioned above, we will endeavour to keep the content on CGNetworks free. There was no mention in the PR because this is subject to review as we see the popularity and just how economical it is to run.

jturner - Yup, we're looking at running more fundamental stuff such as design, lighting, texturing, etc. rather than the software-specific.

If you're after specific Maya training, get the Gnomon DVD's from http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com or try Gnomon Online at http://www.gnomononline.com.

That's cool...but it still doesn't teach anyone what makes good art. The tech in my opinion is about %1 of the creation.

What do you mean? Doesn't your computer have the 'make art' button?

Thanks for the tip, but let's not forget that for those who don't have the money to purchase the Gnomon videos, you can ALWAYS get specific professional-grade training over Maya and numerous other software packages at www.3dbuzz.com (http://www.3dbuzz.com)!

Hope this helps!

Any updates or news on this? The industry could always use more training and I for one was excited to see how this was going to turn out.

Thanks :)
