kblackwd 02-17-2009, 11:31 AM I want to make a tattered dress meaning it had rips and tares all over it with dangling threads and all that fun stuff... Whats the best way to go about it or could someone point me in the right direction or towards and tutorial. Thanks.

Well, you didn't mention what program you are using... I will assume Maya?
Anyways, your best bet would probably to just model it and make it nCloth. nCloth is amazing, if you haven't used it. If not, you should look up some tutorial and see what you can do.
Basically, you will just model your dress however you want it, then you convert it to nCloth. You can run the simulation by pressing the Play button. You can enable Interactive Playback in the nCloth drop-down menu. With this enabled, you are able to manipulate your geometry while you are running the simulation.
To set geometry up as nCloth, simply select the geometry, nCloth->Create nCloth.
To create collision, select geometry to collide with, nCloth-> Create Passive.
You can then tell the nCloth where to stay using nConstraints.
You can edit all of your nCloth attributes in the channel/attribute editor.
Maybe this will help. Maybe not....
Good luck.

I just turned to Ncloth yesterday actually and have figured it all out thanks. I think I am going to make the skirt nCloth and have an alpha over it to simulate the rips and tares. Appreciate the response anyhow.
And yes I am using Maya, good guess.
