View Full Version : vehicle: Panzer Kampfwagen VI Ausfall E - Tiger I
arlechinu 07-01-2003, 10:43 PM hi there!
just finished (well, almost finished) modelling this tank adn i'm off to do the texturing
however, i'm a genuine newbie when it comes to texturing
so i was wondering if anyone could help me out with some advice, some links to good tutorials or any other useful resources with regard to texturing tanks or something like that...
also, if anyone around here has got some experience with this kind of vehicle texturing, i would most definitely appreciate some help
last, but not least, any suggestions and opinions regarding the mesh itself are also welcome!
looking forward to hearing from you people!
later!
PS: the files are too big to attach here and i couldn't make them be any good at 20kb, so here are the links to the files:

edit: well, it seems that in order to view the files you have to copy the adress above and paste it into the browser adress bar... it should work like that... sorry!

Very impressive model, that is!!!
The textures however definately need more work, though. They're too plain and basic. I am unsure about the colours you used. They don't seem authentic to me, but i could be wrong. Also the font you used for the number doesn't seem to be right. It appears squashed as well on the gun barrel. Furthermore the zimmerit is a bit too regular. Often patches were broken or missing too.
I'd say, rework the textures a bit, render it with some nice environment and you got a winner!

thanx for the replies!

yeah i know the textures seem a bit basic and regular, but this is my first attempt at texturing a model :) and also, the only couple of photos of the real tank that i modelled showed the tank almost brand new, so i tried to make the textures not very worn off, if you know what i mean
that's why the zimmerit seems too regular, without missing bits and such
as for the colors... well the colors are still a puzzle to me. the real tank used dunkelgelb and dunkelbraun. however, the real colors are subject to quite a controversy in the ww2 armour literature. so i tried to approximate the real shades of the colors. i asked for advice on some ww2 armour forums and people said that the colors look right... i guess it's a matter of personal interpretation :)
the fonts... well, i have no idea as to which fonts i should use, so i just used a font that seemed ok. do you happen to have any idea about which font i should use?
and yeah, i was thinking of adding some sort of enviroment too... will work on that :)
also, if you have any specific advice on how to improve the textures... that would be great!

One thing you could do with the textures, is to add a grunge map overlay to them. This is basically a map with messy stuff on it, that breaks up the plain colours. Use colour grunge maps for optimum result. A photograph of rusty metal usually works great. Use it as a nearly transparent overlay.
The add some subtle dirt, scratches and so on, but only to the level you feel comfortable with. If you want a brand-new tiger model, then that's great! Keep it to a minimum. There will always be the occasional stain though, as -though new- Tigers were never polished and factories are far from clean! ;)
The font... I'm no armour expert, but have a look at my website, under Downloads. I have a Luftwaffe font there. It might have a similar style to the German army fonts.
Also you could look for scale model reviews and use decal sheets as a guide. Here's an example:
http://homepage.mac.com/brentdietrich/Tigerdecals.gif
Cross-check their accuracy with photographs though, whenever possible.
A particularly good modelling site with daily updates is http://www.hyperscale.com
As for Tiger colours... overall sand yellow or overall field grey seem to be commonly accepted schemes. But again, I'm no armour expert! :)

your model is superb. I mean that really. I am an armour modeller, and I would be thrilled to have time to put in that much detail. My own tiger pales in comparison.
however, your texture is letting down an otherwise brilliant model, to the extent that the untextured model is more impressive!. you have the projections sorted nicely, so its time to paint.. you need to emphasise edges, highlight the detail, bring in some subtle scratches and dents, and apply some dirt.. its worth a few hours in photoshop to make your model go from 'wow' to 'oh my god'
if you like I can post up a texture map from one of my models, just so you can see the kind of thing I am talking about?

skyraider:
ok, i will try that (i tried it before but i wasn't quite pleased with the result... will give it one more shot :)
as for the fonts, i have already downloaded your luftwaffe fonts and i was thinking of using that font too.
baddog:
thanx!
if you are a armour modeller, then perhaps you could help me out with some advice on how to improve the textures... i know i should emphasise the edges and add dirt, but i'm not so sure how to do it to get the best results
any help would be really appreciated
and yeah, post up one of your maps or send it to my email. that would be helpful too ;)
all in all, it might be the colors that kind of make the textures seem like they were laking detail. i mean the dark brown. i uploaded another render without the brown stripes at this address. as you will probably notice, the textures look better (at least i think so)

hello again!
i finally managed to make some renders of the tank model from all angles around it
i also decided to let go of the camouflage scheme with the dark brown stripes because the colors simply seemed to hide the details of the model
so here are the links to all the renders of the Tiger model with the dark yellow cammo scheme. haven't added more wear and tear to the paintjob since i wanted to make the model look not very beaten up. also i have to admit that i'm kinda anxious to get started on another model so i don't think i'll have the time to do more work on this model, maybe just add some enviroment...

wow nice work so far. Heres my suggestion on weathering the textures. Pretend your a soldier using that tank and look at every inch of that tank and see yourself using the equipment on it over and over again and then imagine what would happen to that particular section of the tank: paint chipping off? metal dented?
Now picture just what the weather would do to the tanks paint job. put some rust and other junk on there to give it a look of being used alot. Im talking rusted shovels, the exhaust covers on the back might have alot of soot on them and so on and so forth.
