Hi all,

I'm back again with another bonehead problem. For some reason I seem to be completely hopless with UV Mapping.

I'm trying to follow the Maya Character Animation book's technique for mapping a head. A difference from the example is that I'm selecting the faces of an attached head, rather than mapping a stand alone one. It says to change the Projection Horizontal to 360. Mine won't seem to go any higher than 140.

Another thing is says is to change the Projection Center to .00001, which seems to throw off my projection map so that it's not encompassing the selected faces.

Please help, I'm dying to do some painting.

I apologize for the crappy image. I'm still trying to get a hold of someone at my internet service to get my web page going, so I can link images.

Thanks,
mo

here are my crappy but works solution,

first way:

seperate the head from the body and follow the book step by step then attach the head back

second way:

make a copy of the head, or use the book's tut file to see what effects the parameters in the tut is having on the UV and mapping, and understand/read why the tut is doing that.

then, take the newly learned knowledge and apply it to your model. (personally, i don't follow extact parameters from a tut book, they only works to show you an idea, its the idea thats important, not the exact param's)

I cant really tell you more because i don't know the book and don't know where you are coming from.... just some personally thoughts.

I had actually tried detaching the head and mapping it seperately, but ended up with same problem.

It appears that UV map I'm ending up with has back side of the head UVs overlaping. Not spread out like I'm thinking they should be.

tried relaxing the UV? or the other options in the UV mapping window, just use undo if it doesn't work.

I cant tell you extacts cause i don't have your model and i am not THAT exp'd with maya to have every option memorized.

Yeah, I need to get more familiar with all the tools. I shut up now and do just that!

Thanks for your time bro!

hey!!:wavey:

i have that book too. it's quite good.

you should be able to change the projection to 360, i had no problem doing this...are you sure you are changing the right param? if you can't enter the value in the channel box then you could try doing it manually, using the manipulator.

i sometimes find that rotating the projection manipulator slightly will also sometimes fix the problem, tho not always.

well they are just a couple of ideas but i'm not really too experienced in mapping either. ( just completed that bit of the book last week)
:applause:

hope that helps a little.

cheers!!

Check out this great tutorial: Kniffen UVs (http://www.kniffen.ca/index.php?target=tutorials/texture/UV1.php)

Particularily, pay attention to step 5. It explains the Maya cylindrical map bug, your probably experiencing.

Awesome, thanks for the link ThreeDeemer!

Hey Rob, the book is quite good. the most UV information i've seen anywhere yet. i'm not sure what my problem is, i just haven't been able to put it together yet.

I might be telling you something that you are already aware of here, but you can also adjust the horizontal projection via the UV manipulator that appears in the viewports when you apply the projection - typicallly the perpective view. You'll see the relevant figures update in the channel box if you do this.
