View Full Version : Character blend shapes (expressions)
moncyarts 02-16-2009, 02:54 PM I am very much curious about the technique used behind the feature films like Madagascar, King fu Panda, Ratatouille etc. Actually what method they are using? I know the Maya method, connecting different shape objects to the main shape using the blend shape editor. But I think its a bit old method, same was being used around 6 - 7years back also. Is there any new techniques? Somebody can help me on this?

Take a look at the Coraline article. Sometimes oldies are goodies.
Laika used a hybrid of both traditional model makers and sculptures with digital artists, defining their own language along the way. Everything started with hand sculpted clay marquettes that were scanned into Maya using a 3D scanner. The faces were remodeled to maintain every detail and imperfection the original sculpt possessed; stylized wrinkles, bags under the eyes, moles and freckles that all needed to remain consistent throughout the expressions. The models were rigged using blend shapes and posed for the various facial positions, carefully noting proper placement of the tool marks from the creation process.
Anyway, here is a great demo reel that shows what can be done with facial rigging. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
