View Full Version : FireGl 8800 directDraw failure
Hy,
my new fireGl 8800 give me some trouble, not essential but...
tryng to play games like age of empires I get a message:
"Couldnt intitialize your graphic resolution. Check that your graphic video driver are compatible with directDraw"
Is it necessarry to tell that I have all the necessary drivers and all service pack updated to the very last one!
Do somebody have the same bad result with an other firegl 8800?
Thanks!

the fireGl 8800 is heavily optimised for openGL, but having said that it is 100% DX8.1 compliant, so you should have no problems with directdraw or direct3d.
my only advice is uninstall your current drivers completely. visit windowsupdate amd get all of the latest updates for your system (including the latest directx), adnd then redownload and reinstall the fireGL 8800 drivers from ati.com.
make sure that the mode you are choosing within your game is supported by the fireGL card. a list of supported resolutions, refresh rates and colour depths can be found here:

I also getting this error msgs from my FireGL 8700:
"Couldnt intitialize your graphic resolution. Check that your graphic video driver are compatible with directDraw"
I think FireGL is not optimised in Games, anyway, I didn't play
game much but doing 3D design more for my PC.
BLC, you may try to download the latest driver from ATI & get
DX9 updated, maybe it can run the games.
Hope its help & let us know what's the outcome.
Rgds
:)
Thanks to you Draco76 and Elvis,
I had try yet all you mention. Draco76, I am "Happy" (mmm...) that you get the same message on your 8700, that means it not a question of firegl 8800 hardware issue.
I made a fresh install in an other computer with the same results.
Also test with W2K, SP1, SP2, SP3, SP4, directX8 and 9.0A, Ati driver 3056 and 3064.
Ati reply as you say that this card was'nt intend to play games but also that they where ont advice about such a problem... to what I reply: and if your are game developper? And what do I have to think about a video card wich is supposed to be much more performant than a low cost one and which is not able to do the basic function?
Results and conclusion:
1) I am very desapointed by ATI
2) Will wait for a new driver - should be very long
3) will buy a new Nvidia video card which are maybe slower but with better drivers - any advice?
4) Let know to other graphic designer "that the best" is not necessary the best to ATI point of vue.
5) Have a long fresh drink and come back to a zen attitude.
cheers.

Blc,
1.) Don't get disappointed, look on the bright side, since you can't play games then concentrate more on 3d or design work as the
card is meant for all these.
2.) If you had extra money to spend, change your current system into a workstation & bulid another system for gaming, unless, ATI
has come out a driver that can let you play games (chances are quite low).
3.) I saw some threads in this forum, can't remember that Nvidia's quadro XXX can play games like geforce 4 & at the sametime also a workstation card. But is expensive, don't know had the price drop already?? Maybe you can ask around or just get a Geforce card.

:D :p
Thanks draco76,
1) It's exactly what I was thinking about yesterday night: now I have good reasons not to spend 4 hours playing games!
2) I have no extra money and if I find some I will buy a new production computer before game for sure
3) That was my first idea about workstation card but didn't check if it able to play or not. I thought innocently that if the card was able to do the best she could do the mini...was wrong
Ok let's go back to Set up that computer and than 3d works. I saw so much nice things I want to try all long of this forum.
Thanks for your support !

the nvidia quadro4 cards are great cards, and also work very well in games. the quadro4 750XGL can be bought quite cheaply these days, and is a nice price to performance card.
it's based on the geforce4 ti4200 core, which gives you an idea of the performance of the card. nvidia drivers are also very stable. nvidia's software development is the benchmark that all hardware manufacturers shoud learn from, i think.

Amen. And I don't think nVIDIA ever made a card that was slower than the FireGL 8700/8800. The Quadro4's kicked the crap out of those pieces of...uh... crap.
