Ive been a max user for awhile and have just taken up maya. I cant seem to find the answer to this question anywhere. I would simply like to unhide some invisible edges BUT not triangulate the whole mesh. If i select just one polygon and hit triangulate it shows all of the edges in that polygon, but I only need to show 1 or 2. As a simple example, ive cut up a cube and would like to make the edges in red visible.

Thanks

I think since Maya is capable of N sided faces that you would have to use the split polygon tool and carefully insert the edges that you want.

it's exactly what gmask said. the edges you want maya to show don't exist in your object

hmm...so even though the edges are there, id have to cut them to make them defined? strange...

thanks for your help

No.. there aren't actually edges there.. it is one face until you split it and add the edges.

You could however select that one face and then hit triangulate and then quadangulate.. that should make the covnersion less tedious.

hey!!:wavey:

you can show those edges by going to the CUSTOM POLYGON DISPLAY menu. it's under one of the menu's at the top of the screen.

in there is an option to turn them on. but this will turn them on in the whole model. and it still doesn't let you edit them (flip trianglee edge doesn't work on them)

i know that this isn't exactly what you are looking for but as the others said, maya works different to max. it's just a matter of getting used to the differences.

as far as i can remember from earlier times in max, it only can handle 3 sided polygons.. so whenever you create polies there, max automatically triangulates them.. which is not such a bad idea since polies with more edges than 3 can be non planar and like that not really predictable in rendering since they dont build up a plane anymore (if non-planar).

maya can have such non planar polies and in most cases ewven renders them ok..

so the poly in your image definitely has non planar faces.
there is no setting as in max to show the triangulated polygons in maya, since there ARE indeed no seperate faces there:

so either:
- create the new faces by hand with the split polygon tool
- triangulate your faces

cheers
