View Full Version : Compositing FumeFX render passes

Has anybody had any experience rendering passes out in FumeFX and then compositing it into a scene afterwords? Right now if I render out a fire/smoke pass, by default it comes out on a black background with an alpha channel. If I take that into photoshop or whatever, there is a black halo around the smoke (compositing onto a light/white-ish surface). I could set the background to white, but if the smoke moves over a dark background there is a white halo.

The easy solution is to use a screen layer (or similar), but then I lose a lot of the smoke's fidelity.

not exactly sure what's wrong with my workflow, but it's obviously something on my end I'm sure. If I'm not being clear enough please let me know! Also, thanks in advance for any gurus who can shed some light!

If you took this into after effects/combustion (any comping program) and 'premultiply alpha' it gets rid of the black halos.

Currently its bringing the alpha in straight which you don't want, you want to premultiply it.

Hey, cool! Thanks a lot! I've played with compositing a bit before, but up until now it has all been pretty straightforward matting, this smoke thing had me stumped.

Appreciate it!
