Hey guys. I just wanted to see if anyone know of a plug-in or something to 3dsMax that simulates the snap tools found in Maya? And no half-ass crap, all the features, snap to grid, snap to vertex on "v" default etc.

If you've tried both programs you know what I'm talking about. And no the Max snap isn't nearly as good or easy to use.

I started out as a 3dsMax user and was fairly good at that program, I then changed to Maya and found it to be...less powerful in many ways. BUT, the snap tools are just excellent in every way and now I can't imagine working without them.

However all the other crap in Maya I can do without, Maya has nothing that Max doesn't except for those tools imo. And before you say something, no, it really doesn't. Everything is 2 more clicks for doing the same stuff 3dsMax does in one click. And stuff like that matters.

Also, I hear all these good things about XSI whooping both Max and Mayas asses when it comes to poly modeling and UV mapping, is this the case?

I use both and well, sorry.. from what I know, you can't emulate the snap function of Maya in Max. I hate it but that's the way it is. I also hate the navigation in Max compared to Maya.

As for modeling toolset, I still think Max has Maya's beat on that, not sure about XSI, though I can say I think Modo beats them all. As for unwrapping, I don't use Max nor Maya. I use Blender. It's very similar to Modo, but, ...free.

Hehe, if you by navigation mean viewport navigation then there's this plug-in called switcher I think that sets max viewport navigation to the same as Mayas. I think it had some negative impacts however, like you couldn't shift-drag to copy something. Which kinda sucks... Another feature that maya lacks btw... (as far as I know) :P

But those are som sad news mate.. :( I mean, it always seems like one program lacks one thing or another. Why isn't there simply one perfect program utilizing the good things from all the programs out there?

I want a stripped down 3d progg without all the crap, I mean..there's so much crap that you NEVER use. And then they bind all these useless features to keys by default, so you'll end up pressing something in the heat of battle and just collapse you entire mesh into a ****ing turtle or something. It's like death traps lurking all over the keyboard. "Press shift-h to pour a cop of coffe"

The other day I accidentially pressed "shift-m" in maya and it removed a viewport menu, that was basically impossible to turn back on. I don't think there actually exists a toggle within the program except for shift-m. Had to browse the forums to find it. And please, why would you ever want a keyboard shortcut for turning of a menu? It's insane, whoever designs these things is a sadist.

I tried switcher... like you said, there was some negativity about it too. Hey, if you want a stripped down version of a 3d app, or something you want without all the fluff, why not buy SILO? I mean, its like 200 bucks and is perfect for modeling, fast and what not. Or you can just use Blender, hell, I do. I love it.

Modo is another one that isn't filled with endless junk..... YET. But yeah, I don't know what kind of work you do but if it's mostly hobby or freelance, surely you can check out one of those other apps and it might suit you fine. I know at my new job I work with MAX but they're gonna let me use Maya because I'm faster, but I will have to import into Max once Im at a point they need everything. :(
