I know this tread should be in the hardware froum, but I will/hope get more answear here. So if the card is really slow or really fast tell me :)

Why don't you try to find some benchmarks on google?!
I would prefere either (Nvidea g-force based) or (ATI Radeon based) graphic cards. I guess it is a matter of prise & taste wich you chose!
Here's some:

Good luck!

Is it for home use or professional work?

Is it just the graphic card you wan't or a workstation?
These ones are nice: http://www.sgi.com/workstations/

GeForce 4 4200. Cheap and fast. Works great for games and Max, which is particularly helpful to me as a realtime artist who needs to check my work in game.

Quadro4 900XGL

Works great, though I can't use the maxtreme drivers, which is frustrating.

I heard that radeon 9x00 did not run well with cad softwares becaus it was based on games. Are u using FireGL drivers or something like that?

ATI Rage 128 Pro. It's not super fast like todays cards, But if you ask me it's a real trooper.

If you like to use Max and play games on the same computer than you better buy Geforce or ATI radeon cards.

I'm using ATI radeon 9500 at work and GeForce 2mx at home.

I dont really need to play any games. 95% will go on cad.

Than I would recommend Nvidia Quadro FX or Quadro 4.

I´ve got an ATI 9700 Pro that I´ve softmodded to the latest FireGL card. Works pretty fine. But what I would like too know is what card I need to be able to, for example, run some of the heavy scenes that comes with particle flow in realtime... :buttrock:

Just bought my new computer with a GeForceFX 5900 128Mb
and I can say that it Literly puts the Ati in the grave. we got the Ati Radeon 9700pro at work and it's performance in OpenGL is ppor to say the least. D3D performance is better, but still not all that.

my GeForceFX 5900 on the other hand is blazing fast. let's just say that it can move around 6 million [10 teapots with 64 segments each] faces in realtime across the screen.

cheers.

side-note, the fx5900 is the new version of the fx5800 [the 5800 being the one with the leafblowerfan on it making a LOT of noise]

I can honestly say that the fx5900 fixes everything that was bad about the 5800.

The only problem with that card is that it aint cheap. Do u think the geforce 4800 ti powerpack golden bla bla bla is any good? For heavy scenes?

yeah last i heard the 4600 [which is what the 4800 is based on]
performs excellent. just make sure it's not a 4800se because that one is based on the 4200 if i recall correct which is a lesser gpu.

I really dont like the nv30 chips or what ever they are called. I have some pretty bad reviews on them. A geforce 5900 would be nice. WHat did u get? The msi one...?

Don't know really.

I just prefer asus since i had some bad experience with MSI motherboards.

My rule of thumb : 'If Asus builds it, I will get it'.

meaning that if i need a piece of hardware and amongst other manufacturers Asus has it, i go with asus.

I have an Asus Mobo & Asus GraphicsCard.
they have never let me down . . . yet

I have already seen it, but thx anyway. The reaseon why I am not/cant get a quadro card is that I have to order it from a webshop over seas and I dont want that becaus I will use a webshop online where I can build the whole pc there. Also the only cards I can find here is those Compaq: qaudro bla bla bla etc. A wildcat card would be cool, but it dont look like u can play any games with and it dont got Tv out-put.

I am wondering if I will buy a cheap GF4200 and after the GF5900 gets a lower price I will give the GF4200 card to my bro....

Why not buy from the web? When buying Nvidia card your main concern should be to get Maxtreme working. If it doesn't work you get a stable but very slow performance. In which case it doesn't make sense to pay $500 or whatever the top gaming cards cost. Plus, FX can't be softquadroed.

So get a Quadro.

I use 750XGL (Compaq and PNY at work), it's fast with Maxtreme but is as slow as a Geforce4 Ti 4200 without maxtreme (2 to 3 times slower).

The following article if you read to the end and compare results (maxtreme is a "special driver") highlights some performance differences, :
http://www.digit-life.com/articles2/profcards/profcards-11-2002-3dsmax5.html

discreet results that were linked to by Anton Andriesh should give you a good idea as well (compare OGL and Custom performance over there - it's SEVERAL TIMES slower).

Hi why u guys want to pay money for Quadro4 cards... What about soft Quadro4 cards?

I have a computer running Geforce4 4200 8x card, I made it Quadro4 780XGL type card.

i do my all 3d stuff without a problem now. But if u like to have an original Quadro4 XGL of FX one then go for it.

First of all not everyone can make it work. Second - you'll have to do it for the rest of the card's life. Third - newer drivers usually add protection so it's not easy to upgrade drivers. Fourth - it doesn't work with FX (and considering all the ugly events before SQ4 came out you never know if it ever will). Fifth - you're at the mercy of Unwinder and other more shady characters. 6th - It makes troubleshooting even more difficult than it already is. Etc...

Buttom line - all this hassle is worth more than a couple of hundred bucks to me.

[edit] That said 4200 is a softquadroable cost-effective solution that even without softquadro is almost as good as a Quadro4 without maxtreme. So for non-professional purposes it should be allright.

Hey folks,

I just won a Quadro fx500. I've been using my geforce 4200 for a while now and just decided to install my new card. Am I in good hands with the Quadro or equally well off with the 4200? I've never really paid much attention to them (quadros) except that they are the 'professional' card.

I don't game, so this is for 3d :)

Thanks yall.

I've got a Wildcat II 5110. Has 144Mb memory and it is a superb card.
I tried to make it suffer, but it takes everything like a joke. I think it covers just about any task if you're after CAD. And it gives an incredibly clear and crisp picture.

On the other hand...no gaming. So...

I don't know why you say you don't wan't to order from the web...? I got my card from ebay, and I'm much further from the US than you are...
