View Full Version : Help! Weird Split Polygon Reaction!
Quizboy 07-01-2003, 12:24 PM hi all,
i am using maya 5.0 for the first time. previously i was using 4.0
i'm having a weird reaction with my Split Polygon Tool. the first image is early stages of my self-imposed eye exercise, the second is where the polygons should have been split to refine the area, but not to make a gap!
little background: the planes visible is front face of a box made out of one connected cube. i've selected the front faces which i needed to work on and in the menu pane for the front view, selected Show > Isolate > View Selected to only work on those particular faces. All the other Splits seen in the image were done with the Split Polygon Tool and worked out just fine.
Can anyone tell me why this simple function isn't working for me?
Help!

hey:wavey:
Never had any of that crazy stuff happen to me, but i'm still using maya 4.0.
maybe you should post a better pic tho coz from those ones it's really hard to see the geometry.
just thought it might make it easier for someone else to help you.
well, good luck with your problem.
cheers!!

Are you in "isolate" mode (i mean panel \ isolate xxx)?

i am in isolate mode if that means that i have selected the particular faces of interest to be worked on...why is that bad?

sorry if the pic's not that clear, but the main idea is that big gap that you see in the second version. that after trying to split polygon down those faces. the intention is not that the geometry gets dramatically changed, just that i split up the faces there to be able to further refine the area...

hallo, if it is true what fasteez says, you should try to do it NOT in isolate mode.
Maybe you should delete history on the face you are modeling, because history can leave you with strange results.

while we're on the subject of deleting history. I've been told, and read in the manuals, and read in tutorials and everywhere else to constantly delete by type > history all the time in order for things to work properly. I do this, but the truth is i don't understand the logic behind the concept.
Why do we need to constantly be deleting history in order to get our models to work?

and by the way galactor, where are you in the Netherlands?

I do my study in Enschede, butt in the weekends i life near Nijmegen. Are you using Maya for fun/education or work ?
Well it's not nesecery to delete the history each time you do something. Butt if you never delete history thing can slow down a lot. And that is more noticeable when working on Nurbs.
So for example if you made a trimm, and after that you move the curve that you used to project on the surface, the trimm will move across the surface.
Butt you deffinitly don't want to delete history after you skinned your character, cause then the whole skinning process will be deleted.

As they say in the Netherlands, Maya and art is my "hobby" but i personally despise the mentality that tries to keep ones true interest so compartmentalized. I'm from the United States where we don't use the word that way.
If someone asks me "what do I do?" i would first say that I am a CG artist with an interest in working for film - or that i am studying art/animation, before i would say that i'm a network engineer even though this is my fulltime job. Why? because in my case my "hobby" as they say defines me more as a person than the work i do which is the true nature of the question "what do you do?" This i would rather put forward as the first stepping stone of a conversation because it is more representative of who i am.
Maya is not my work (yet), but if i tell you i do it for fun/education that would be true but it would not convey the committed passion and intensity with which I pursue the development of my knowledge and skills in this area with the intent of making it my fulltime work as soon as my skill level and the market allow. By the U.S. definition this is different than a hobby, which means that someone simply does something for the fun of it with no professional intent. Like working on your garden, or building things out of wood for your nieces and nephews.
So what do you do?

I'm still a student. My study at the highSchool in Enschede is called "Art and Technics". As it says, it combines a bit of both subjects.
Besides being a student i'm also a teacher. I'm responsable for the classes "Director" and "3d Animations with Maya". In about 1.5 year i should be finished and ready to find a great job.
In my spare time i'm also verry bussy with 3D. At the moment i'm writing some MEL scipts. What i still want to do/learn is compositing with combustion.

That's interesting 'cause I'm certified in Combustion. Not that i'm any good at it, but i know how to use it and i have the official Discreet training course book with CD-rom exercises that I used when i took the official 3-day training course at TopCad training in Delft.
If you want we could get together one weekend this summer and walk through the exercises together. (I intend to do them all again to sharpen up) You just bring your computer out to Almere and we sit down and go through the book chapter by chapter each in front of our own console. It makes it faster if you've got someone sitting next to you you can ask questions right on the spot...let me know

Folks, I can't 100% tell you what the problem was with my Split Polygon Tool, but I think rebooting the computer had something to do with solving the problem. It works fine now - in Isolate Select mode...
Lucky for that mode too, because i was convinced the problem would be isolate select, and was prepared to write a thread bashing this mode. Instead I LOVE Isolate Select mode because it's so handy for when number vertices and faces starts to grow and you still want to be able to move quickly...
Thanks for your help. Happy Maya-ing!
