Dear friends and industry colleagues,

It has been 12 months since CGNetworks (formerly the core editorial and development team for CG Channel) was established. Since then CGTalk has grown from 4000 members to over 40,000, making it one of the largest online communities for digital visual effects professionals and enthusiasts alike.

We are pioneers in our field, establishing the International 3D Awards (http://www.3dawards.org) - the first ever of its kind in the 3D industry and co-organized the 3D Festival, Europe's largest CG conference. We are also publishing EXPOSÉ (http://www.ballisticpublishing.com), the CG industry's premiere art book.

Update:

CGNetworks.com (website (http://www.cgnetworks.com))
Our new web portal and webzine replaces the 3D Festival website, which will be reopened as an event website when 3DF2004 is announced. All CG news, reviews, feature articles and content will be published on CGNetworks.com. The CGTalk gallery is now situated on the CGNetworks website and CGChallenge.com will also be ported in the coming month.

Partnership with Gnomon School of Visual Effects
CGNetworks and Gnomon have entered into a strategic partnership for delivering quality digital effects training online. As part of the on-going partnership, CGNetworks will be providing the technological infrastructure for Gnomon Online, the distance learning website run by Gnomon at http://www.gnomononline.com. Selected videos of classes, lectures and other training material from Gnomon will be delivered through the CGNetworks website starting in August 2003.

Ballistic Media
CGNetworks is now a division of Ballistic Media, a larger media company formed by us to handle the different businesses running under the one banner. Ballistic Publishing, our publishing division, will be responsible for producing EXPOSÉ and other CG books.

For more information about the entire CGNetworks business, please refer to the About page, which explains everything that we do from websites, to world-class events and books.

It's exciting times ahead of us!

this partnership with gnomon sounds interesting. so is cgnetworks gonna provide us with free tutorials because of this partnership or will you still have to pay for it all?

The stuff to run on CGNetworks is intended to be free. We need to review the situation in case it get's too popular where bandwidth becomes an issue - however, the intention is to provide the tutes and co-brand CGNetworks and Gnomon.

Gnomon Online will always remain as a pay site.

Hope that clarifies it.

No problem, force every member to buy a cg-string and you'll have enough money for more bandwidth ;)

Now seriuos: These are great news! You can be proud of what you did and will do!

Big Cheers, CGNetwork team

It's kinda funny to look back and when the site changed format and colors and every time people swore that they hated it and were never gonna come back... well... that never happened.

Once all the talk and hype goes away, its an awsome thing that has happened, hopefully this will allow for more greater things to happen, for both professional and student / newbie alike

good luck to all, and lets keep this going,

I have to admit that you guys have really done a good job at expanding and improving your web sites over the last year. I also really like the more professional tone that has developed here recently. Good work!

so confusing

isn't that there has no 3dfestival.com anymore but cgnetworks.com?

Read the about page to find out the answer but bascially

3dfestival is an event, much like siggraph, and we only really push this site around the event time. CGNetworks is a webzine which 3DFestival was never meant to be, but it was in our blood to continue bringing content so we did :) CGNetworks basically frees us from that restriction of having everything under an event website but we co-organize 3DFestival when that time comes (most likely beginning of 2004 we'll push the site again).

And it's really cool you guys like the site!

Man I can't believe all the changes that this site has gone through since I joined. The seperation from cgchannel, the increase in members, the 3d awards. It's amazing you guys have done such a fantastic job since this all started.

excellent...man I love all these resources at my fingertips! very empowering....

but why do the designs of cgtalk always seem similar to the designs of cgchannel? is there a shared connection (as the poster above me mentions)...I'm a bit new to cgtalk so I'm not sure. Thanks again for all the stuff!

This is great news! I'm very glad that 3dbuzz has had such an excellent impact on the 3d industry that even such people as Gnomon would start doing free training. Thank you 3dbuzz and cgtalk...great move!

It is amazing when you think about how far they have come. Ive been here almost since the beginning, through all the CGC drama and server troubles, Im just amazed by these improvments. CG Networks and the people behind it are honestly some of the nicest, most down to earth individuals out there.

Heres to the future and continued success.

If you read Leonard's initial post, and do a search, the reason it looks similar is because the CGNetworks crew are all the original editorial and development team for CG Channel. These guys MADE CG Channel. One year ago, they left after some dispute (which is all past now I gather), and the content/goodness on CG Channel simply went downhill. They then went on to do all sorts of great things like the 3D Awards and 3D Festival. Now they're BACK with CGNetworks. With this partnership with Gnomon, EXPOSÉ and more, it's gonna be a ride!

Look at the people these guys hang out with!

I am wondering about the finacial ideas behind the EXPOSE book as well as future financial ventures. Is the network a nonprofit idea or is the long term goal to have it make money?

I hope this post fits this thread, and I hope I have made my question clear enough.

Out,
Don

dbach - The entire venture of CGNetworks and Ballistic is to provide a quality service for the CG industry. The hard fact is that we can't do that without finance. Banner advertising doesn't sell and do not cover costs. However, books do sell and all parties win: customers get a quality product, and we can continue running everything. We will always endeavour to give everyone good value. CGTalk will remain free, and the news/content on CGNetworks too.

Invader Zim - The five of us that left are from all over: Australia, Toronto, San Francisco.

Best,

L.

Thanks for you answer Leonard.
It nice to read that CGTalk and CGNetwork will remain free - for a long time... I hope for all of us CGPeople (humm... If we were a country, what would we be called ?!? - CGNetworkers, CGTalkers, CGNetTalkworkers...)
Sorry 'bout that - most go to bed
