Who is the ILM VFX supervisor on this one?
Hopefully there's some ILM guys reading this thread...
What the hell did you do with the Paris Shots?
The Eiffel Tower is obviously not at the right place! Do you really think that international viewers are not going to notice??

It's called composition and storytelling.
It's called composition and storytelling.
Misplacing the most visited monument in the world isn't what I would call good storytelling..in a movie supposed to happen at present time..IMO

So I guess in Transformers 3 when Bay moves the Statue of Liberty to San Francisco that's okay then because it's just a movie and it's all for making the story better.
Or on the local front, moving Ayers rock to just outside Sydney because they're the only 2 landmarks foreigners recognise as Australian (sarcastic generalisation)
Pure action, just the way it should be.
It's called composition and storytelling.Oh I don't know, I thought the tower was unnecessary. They might've put it there just to say "here's Paris" but it's only the top half and it went so quick I didn't even notice it was the Eiffel tower the first time around. Europeans would probably notice the discrepancy easily too so why bother? A whole lot of compositing work for nothing.

MAK, I think your first mistake was believing that anyone at ILM or any other VFX house would be responsible.
I say take your complaints to Bay, since he's the director and was probably the guy who told people to put it there, anyone else was probably just doing thier job.
there is also a good possibillity that that shot was done at DD, Bay does own it now (or is part of a conglomerate that does).

No one complained when they got Harlem wrong in the Incredible Hulk - The Apollo theater looks a wee bit different and is surrounded by different buildings than in reality0 (it's clear that was just a set). Things like this get changed in a film all the time either due to the inability to get the rights to shoot near the landmark, or because it's too costly to do so. Sometimes it's just cheaper to throw it in after the fact. I have no idea what the entire scene is like but if they never show the viewer landmarks, it's easy to forget where something is supposed to be taking place. I admit, it would be nice if they tried to get the landmarks more accurate but that's not always possible or financially viable at the time.

I have to admit that the cloverfeild poster seemed to have the satue of liberty facing the wrong way (looks like she's facing inland) had me slightly miffed but I forgave after I saw the movie because the movie was a fun one to see in the theaters because the sound design was so well done. watching it at home will never be the same experiance for me.
so I can understand people in france being miffed by thier most visable and reconizable landmark being moved around. I don't persoanlly care, but i'm not french (not even a little... :) ) but I can atleast understand it.
the shot does look pretty dammed cool though. :D

I agree.
Though Harlem is hardly the eiffel tower...lol.
Either way this is a M.Bay film. Therefore the audience will be spoon....fed...every...detail.
Here is France, see the berets and the eiffel tower. Here is London, see the Red buses, black cabs and the London Eye. Here is Morocco, see the funny people with market stalls...etc etc...(thats a joke, please dont kill me..)
It doesnt bug me, but i wish that film directors would have a bit more respect for their audiences intelligence sometimes...

Hm.. This trailer is really bad. Alot of nicely executed vfx shots, in an absolutely stupid context. Its just stupid. I must confess, I hate the transformers concept, so im absolutely biased, but this trailer is just crap! This movie is about stupid robots and closeups of young american actors?
I think the vfx shots is too much over the top. Like the robot designs - its all over the place. Its like eating caviar each day for a month. Even thought its supposed to be the best, it gets boring! Like the first Transformers movie.
Maybe its just me.

Yep.
How do you propose turning a cartoons series that's all about robots fighting and turn it into a movie series that's anything other than robots fighting and still stay true to the original?
Maybe Optimus should have a love interest in the 3rd film and crank out a couple of robot kids and they can all go on a wild rollercoaster adventure where the kids have to save the day because their parents have been kidnapped by an evil organisation dubbed SPUTNIK :banghead:

It's a film about hobbits, one-rings and magic and you're worried about a car driving past in the background? Maybe it's a magic car! It doesn't break immersion one bit.
No, filmmakers never make mistakes. It's always a deliberate decision for sake of storytelling.

Now that's just reductio ad absurdum :) Of course a car in a fantasy film would be ridiculous. But tinkering slightly with the layout of a city isn't that big a deal.
For all we know Transformers is set in a parallel universe in which Paris is laid out slightly differently. Its a sci-fi action film, turn off the left brain for a couple of hours and enjoy the explosions.

Now that's just pretentious to start using Latin, especially in a thread about Transformers :P
Obviously the French agree. The standards of 'ridiculous' are pretty subjective but perceptions being what they are, when the most gung ho of American Directors moves the Eiffel Tower for a shot it's more likely to be perceived as "F you guys" then it is as a legitimate artistic decision.

Michael Bay is the kind of director who canīt show two people talking in a room in France without showing them eating a baguette and with the Eiffel Tower out of the window . If someday he makes something in Brazil Iīm sure heīll show samba-dancing monkeys.
Actually, my love for his films is very close to my love for having my nails plucked out with hot pincers, but like somebody said at least the FX are cool and he employs one bazillion CG artists in the process of making them, so "go bay go!" , etc.

#1, the point was it's not fact, it's fiction.
#2, Whether factual misrepresentation in a movie constitutes bad storytelling or artistic license is what's up for debate.

To be fair to Bay, this is just the trailer, and things can change from trailer to movie (Cloverfield anyone?), so i can fogive him for changing a landmarks position just to quickly show an audience in one shot that we are in Paris. After all, he gets mega criticised for his 'America is what matters so ill make everything happen in America to Americans' attitude, so at least he's suggesting that the rest of the world might have some minor importance in the end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it storylines.
Personally, i loved Transformers 1, coz it was such an easy movie to watch. There were major issues if you think too hard, but come on, everyone should know by now that you NEVER go into a Michael Bay movie if you want a deep intellectual experience.
So yea, moving the Eiffel Tower in that one shot in the trailer is forgivable. He has 3 seconds to say 'Paris' to the audience, and he did that by having a couple of landmarks in one geographically inaccurate shot. Fine. If it continues into the movie, then get your pitchforks ready and we'll go on a Bay hunt.
Nick
