RobertoOrtiz 02-13-2009, 04:21 AM Ok guys what kind of challenge you guys want to do?

Well, I know that you guys just did a cut-away challenge, but it was such a cool concept. However, it seemed to primarily be centered around purely mechanical/non-organic objects. So how about you go with the same concept of the cut-away, but for organic/living organisms? Could be humans, animals, plants (kind of boring, but could be interesting), aliens, whatever. Would be somewhat reminiscent of all of those nature/animal books for kids, or just medical literature, and it would most definitely be pretty hardcore in terms of the difficulty.
The only other thing that pops into mind is musical instruments, but again, sort of boring.
Either way, I'll be watching (much too novice to attempt one of these myself)
Senseicapi
02-13-2009, 06:33 AM
I would like to see something more related to imagination than a real thing; making aliens could be interesting. Something like: what kind of animals could live in a specific planet, like Pluto, or Saturn, I don't know.
Or those speed challenges, like the 30 days 30 models, that one looked cool.
I thought you had a list, just pick one of them! They all looked really cool :)

Here are some of the topics I promised for this year....
Master Tributes...
Master human anatomy studies like (Human body...Cutaway)
Collab projects..
Master Sculptures...
Classic Sculptures...
Filmmaker Tributes...
The return of 30 days 30 models...
One week challenges..
And honestly I am leaning towards doing Classic Sculptures...
HCR MOD: Treasures of the MET
or
HCR MOD: Renaissance
We could do:
HCR MOD: Cutaway/Human Body for a later challenge.

i like the idea of the 80's cartoon challenge...
would they be models accurate to the cartoon or real life interpretations of the characters? or both?
i guess its a smart decision keep transformers out....otherwise everyone would do them.....maybe save them for another challenge
but yeah....my votes in for 80's cartoon tribute
EDIT: oh and add captain planet to the list of cartoons....i think that was the 80's...man i loved that show
EDIT2: my mistake...it was 90's....

I just realised the irony of dangermouse not wanting to do dangermouse...
I agree with not having tranformers, a saying about beating something with a stick comes to mind, but style wise, I repeat robo's question, are we going for accurate, realistic, what? I'm a tiny bit worried about my voltron looking like yet another modern transformers ripoff.
I don't know if I can explain it very well, but I'm thinking a hybrid style where it's built exactly as it was originally designed(like without extra pipes, wires, eye filanges and crap), but with realistic detail like chips and dirt... hmm, i dunno...

If the '80s cartoon idea is chosen for the next competition, I might have to go from an observer who just sat on the sidelines and watched these competitions to being a participant. Just too many great characters and ideas with that topic to not join in.
More shows for the list:
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Darkwing Duck
Pound Puppies
Rainbow Bright
The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (not original 80s characters, but they had a show in the 80s)

I will add a category for:

RobertoOrtiz, for the sake of simjoy and others, how about 80's remakes? there were quite a few really good 60's cartoons :surprised im not THAT old .!!!
70's would be fine .. :)
anyway, its maybe opening a whole big can of worms if you start allowing remakes of all sorts of cartoon series. If we stick to shows CREATED, not re run, in the 1980's, then its a fairly level field.
like everything else it only requires a bit of research to find enough info to work with, even if you dont know the subject well.
obviously the fanboys will put more enthusiasm into it though ...

Batman the Animated Series is definetely 90's but man what a groundbreaking cartoon.

This is a fantastic idea! I've been looking for a good excuse to model something up, and this is perfect.
Johnny Quest was actually 60's :) Thundarr -definately- fits. There's a ton of potential in that one.
Here are a couple more that I think fit :
SpaceGhost
Gobots
And to be clear, anything that is a spin-off does not qualify, correct? So no Superfriends, as an example (Superman being a cartoon from an earlier period).

This is an ongoing debate feyshtey. The shaders, textures, hair shaders etc aren't supposed to enter into judging the final entries. It's not against the rules to texture your model though. As for ZBrush and Mudbox, sculpting is part of the process now.

Anyone remember BraveStarr? Well I always thought the horse was the coolest part of the show. I'm currently debating whether to do The marshall himself or Thirty thirty, the horse. I'm leaning towards Thirty thirty but horse anatomy strikes me as a little hectic. Anyway it'd be awesome to try and work that whole biomechanical horse thing together. Otherwise Marshall Bravestarr is a very cool too. Anyway. Much as work is a little stressful it'd be nice to have a project to take my mind of work. This is a good oportunity to learn Zbrush or mudbox too I think. Oh and I almost forgot "Sarah Jane" Thirty thirty's bazooka/rifle. It's just too cool. Okay decision made Thirty thirty it is.

I tell you what. I first thought I'd do Marshall Bravestarr and the more I look for reference the more I like him. I was thinking of putting it to you (30/30) as a challenge but it'll be too difficult not to influence each other i think. Okay, I'm going to call this one first since I know I'm not going to be the only one wanting to do it.
So my wife picked up Thudercats from the library just to see if my 4 yr old would like it. I'm pleased to say that he is a tremendous Thundercats fan now. I'm sure I sounded just like him when I was a kid "Thundercats... HOOOOOOOO!" Anyway even since then I've been wanting to model Cheetara so there you go.

Lol, my wife was a big Thundercats fan too.
If you google her one of the first images that comes up is her chained up as a sex slave for the mutants. Apparently the newer comic books have taken a very bizzare turn. That is nothing like the original cartoon. They always had a pretty high moral context to them.

No one can model Chuck Norris. As soon as you finish an arm he punches you in the face and says "BOOYA"!!

Are we allowed to add a personal touch to the characters or are we restricted to their 80s design and form?
I'd love to find the time and do a more dramatic Skeletor for this challenge.

I thought about something like a caricature (doesn't have to be a famous man/woman, could be an animal) but a hole scene, that is not restricted to the normal physical lowers, something that when you look at it, you burst in hilarious laughter.

Hey guys. This thread was actually started during the previous Challenge, and was talking about the next challenge (the one we currently have going on). There is a sticky thread located here (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=208&t=347616) that you guys should use. This way, you can ensure that your suggestions will indeed be read.

I'm thinking something like villain vs superheros.
Or people who have alter ego's like Clark Kent and Superman

i think we should show some tiny fighter robots which are small in size and cute looking but very dangerous and should be fully loaded with weapon.

Doing the 80's cartoon HMC now, I'd like to see "Pixel heroes remake!".
Remaking all the earliest game heroes that weren't brought into a future sequel..
So heroes like Mario, The bionic commando and the prince of Persia would be EXCLUDED.
But heroes like mr White from IK+ ,Commander Keen, Rick Dangerous etc. are ALLOWED.
I think that would be an excellent challenge, and a very fun one.

I thought abou that myself. Its a great idea, although I thought with so many games 'brought back to life' these days maybe therese not a lot of characters left. I guess it just requires a bit of thought. I bagsy 'Jet Set Willy' though :)
Other options could be...
The Kiwi bird from New Zealand Story
The ship from R-Type (think Ive seen someone do that on here before)
Character from Ghosts and Goblins (not sure if thats had a 'modern' sequel)
Dizzy (not too 'hardcore modelling though :) )
Paperboy
Brothers from Double Dragon
Roger Wilco from the Space Quest series (and there's many other characters from those games that you could try too)
Anyway, back to modelling...
Pete.

Roberto, I don't know if you've worked out the details for the next challenge, but I have a few suggestions for it.
I was trying to look around the HMC forum, but couldn`t find previous challenges; I believe, however, that before I started entering these challenges that you guys already did a classic sculpture challenge (The David, I believe).
Would it be possible to expand on the idea a little? What I`m thinking is to choose a Historical figure, such as Napoleon Bonaparte, or Wyatt Earp, Any famous figure, and create a model in the style of Classic Suclpture for that Character.
I don't know if I'm explaining myself properly (it's late), but what I mean is instead of replicating something that has already been sculpted, we could Choose a famous person, and then model/sculpt in the classic style.
The reason I suggest this is that, while replicating and copying Historical sculptures is a great learning experience from a technical point of view, for myself I find it difficult to focus and maintain my inspiration if something has already been done. And the reason I suggest Historical figures is so that the challenge doesn't get too out of context. If everyone created their own characters for the challenge, it would be hard to judge in context afterwards.
Thanks for listening.

Rage's suggestion is really sweet. I like that!
How about duplicating the pose of a classic sculpture ie the David, Venus of Milo, Hercules etc etc with any suitable character from either history or fiction?! I think trying to maintain the rhythm etc of the classical masters with another character would be a great challenge and learning experience.
Cheers!

@WyattHarris: do i sense some repressed childhood memories there?....lol
Rageofages idea does sound quite cool in doing your own classical statue of an important figure...could have some real fun with that....
i also like the idea of 15 expressions 1 face
just a few other ideas:
- model your room down to the smallest detail
- self portrait (no shortage of refs there)
- Create a superhero or alternatively reimagine a current superhero
- or combining the above 2....create yourself as a superhero.....and alter ego...

What about - fables - quite a wide subject of childhood stories... could be everybody's own version.
Could be Fables of Lafontaine or any other popular child story / teller, modified to please the contestants.
(Could be the wolf kicking the hunters' *** and keep eating people... the bunny winnign on the turtle, some altered classic stories)
