I wanted to get some feedback. Specifically, do you guys like translucency on the wings and leaves? Do you think the DOF looks convincing? I also realize I need to get some more fur on the guy (butterflies can be kinda furry). And of course, any other comments are more than welcome.

Cool picture! The dof looks good i think, but the wings kind of look like they are painted...you might try making them just a bit more transluscent. And the butterflies body looks a little too dark compared to how illuminated everything else is in the pic.....also the veins (if thats what their called) in the wings look like they stick out too far, and they should be more transluscent as well....just some minor things. But i really think the body needs to be illuminated more, and you would have an even better render! hope i was of some help!

Yeah I agree about the body. I'll lighten it up a bit. I've also been working on the translucency of the wings. I think they look a lot better now. As for the thickness of the veins in the wings, I've been looking at pictures of butterflies on the net and I've seen butterflies with even thicker veins. I'll wait until I get some more feedback to decide for sure, but I think I'm just going to leave them the same. Anyway, I'll post an updated render later tonight.

hi grantimus
i like that alot, although the only thing i would do is add more color to it. Right now i think it looks a little desaturated. like the greens arent bright green, i just think more rich colors.

Hey, that's looking really nice, but there's a couple of things that I felt jarred when looking at it. The proportions of the body are not your usual butterfly, but seem closer to that of a wasp - large rear section, whereas butterflies tend to have a larger middle section where the wings join. Also the point where the wings join the body seems a little too close to the head.
Looking forward to seeing the final image!

Ok here is the latest round of revisions:
http://www.grantheath.com/art/butterfly1.jpg
I've lightned the butterfly's body up a bit, I've made the colors a little more saturated, and I've added a bit more fur (it still needs some tweaking though). And you're right mattmos, the butterfly's body does need a little work. Next on the to do list is fine tine body's shape a little bit (esp. the butt). I'll take care of that later, in the meantime it is 3:00AM my time and I need to get up for school in the morning. So good night.

Good! Now we can see all those nice textures.;) Just one more crit..the eye looks strange to me, like its too big and too dull in color. But you have the reference pics, so if thats the way the eyes should be then don't change them....looking good though!
Very nice image...maybe if you could add some things floating through the air that are semi transparent...little pollen particles or something that are blurred or something like that it would add to the image greatly...it's "clean" too clean almost...looks really good though...great job:thumbsup:

Ok, between school and work I haven't had much free time this past week. But, I've finally found some free time and here is my latest update:

Let me know what you think.
Btw, I really like your idea Remi. I think some pollen would add a lot to the image. This will be the next thing I'll experiment with.

Nice to see some of the smaller creatures being inspiration for projects :) :applause:
Just a few things: the body (abdomen) needs to be more cylindrical, like this (http://www.croczilla.com/svg/butterfly.png)
and the legs are somewhat thin and closely spaced, a more natural look is here (http://www.acnatsci.org/kids/whatsthedif/whatsthediffimages/butterfly.jpg)
As far as veins go, i'd say go for a specific type of butterfly, like cabbage, or monarch, or painted lady, then use an image map of the wings and a bumpmap for the veins, like this (http://gnucvs.vlsm.org/graphics/glue-butterfly.jpg), or this (http://www.sdnhm.org/kids/eyes/images/local-butterfly.jpg)
hope these help with your project.
BTW: the furry texture is great and the set is awesome too :) keep up the good work, mate :)
