well the same rules apply to all apps. modeling, texturing, lighting, composition, post
you prolly know all this stuff already, and your work looks ok, but here goes...
modeling - it's like drawing, make objects that "feel" right and have some strength and weight to them.
texturing - avoid repetative or flat looking textures, so if you're going to use procedurals in there, make sure that you mix them together to form more complex patterns that aren't too even. use the channels wisely. if your'e going to use bump, maybe accentuate that by putting the same textures in the diffuse channel and knocking them back.
lighting - imo one of hte most important things, know when to use fill lights, and ambient lighting, and when not to. it's about atmosphere and mood, it's also about focus and depth. with good lighting you can get away with textures that are merely ok. lighting is probably the number 1 thing to work on for "profesional" looking images.
composition - you don't have to follow rules like the golden mean, or anything like that, but when you're starting out it can help. try not to have thigns centered unless you're goign for a particually confrontational image. tyr not to just fill in each and every corner with an element either, try to work out a flow, work out how the eye will go through the image.
post - don't be afraid to render out all the channels and monkey around with the image in photoshop or after effects. sometimes a subtle lowering of contrast in the background, or a little bit of blurring and overlay can do wonders. just mess around. other more common effects here when used well can help no-end, dof (it's much faster to do in post) etc.
