View Full Version : CHARACTER WIP/CONCEPT: Baz the Trixel
Hookflash 07-01-2003, 04:43 AM Trixels are a very friendly, intelligent species from the planet... Aw, who am I kidding. I have no back-story. I used to draw quite a bit as a child, but, as an adult, I'm fairly new to this whole thing. I got "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" by Betty Edwards, and it's been a big help. I'm going to try doing one sketch every 1 or 2 days from now on. Comments & crits welcome, of coarse.
P.S. What settings do people normally use when scanning pencil drawings? I tried "Illustration" (8-bit greyscale, color-smoothing, etc.) on my Epson Perfection 1260, but the results looked quite a bit different (perhaps better, but that's cheating;)) than my original drawing. In the end, I ended up using a custom setting of 24-bit color with color-smoothing turned off and a resolution of 300 dpi.
P.S.S. Any tips on coloring this guy in Jasc PSP 8 would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Damn... Don't you hate when you write a long message only to have the forum refuse your post for one reason or another? Then, Internet Explorer, in it's infinite wisdom, decides to erase the contents of of all your text-fields when you hit "Back". *grrr*.
Anyways, here's my last revision. I don't think it really looks much better than the original, which is why it's my last;). I was sort of dissappointed by the fact that 45+ people viewed my post, but none chose to reply. This forum gets 100's of "You rock!" replies everytime MyGodWithPencil posts his latest masterpiece, whereas people who need crits & advice the most (ie, me) are met with stony silence. At the very least, I'm sure that, of the 45+ people who viewed this thread, *someone* could have offered some advice on what scanner settings to use. Oh well... No biggie.

Here's my first attempt to color a character with a paint program (I used Jasc PaintShop Pro 8). I'm not thrilled with the results, but it could be worse (trust me, it could;)).

Looks funny. I like it. He sure is illuminating with the color!

i think that it could use darker darks to bring out the form of the figure and clothes and maybe some highlights as well.. it just seems too flat at the moment..
also what exactly are those things protruding from his head? it's hard to make sense out of it because they start behind his head but end up in front of his body and are perfectly straight.
some variation and character in his pose might also help make the piece be more enjoyable..
just a couple thoughts.

Thanks for the crits:). Those things protruding from his head were supposed to be bristly shafts of hair. Unfortunately, they don't really make a whole lot of sense now that I think of it. The bottom ones were supposed to protrude from his jaw, I suppose. :hmm:
