The company will offer 32 pence a share for Eidos, Tokyo- based Square Enix, creator of the “Dragon Quest” series of role-playing games, said (http://www.square-enix.com/eng/pdf/news/20090212_02en.pdf) today. That’s more than double the 14 pence closing level yesterday for London-based Eidos, which surged to as much as 31 pence after the announcement.

I can't think of a worse time to buy a video game company. When the economy was better and people had more money to spend on games this would have made more sense. A broader portfolio could be a good thing for them but in these times I think it will ultimately prove to be a mistake.
Any insight from you fine folks who work in the industry?

Yeah but then Eidos would be more expensive. Perhaps too expensive. Their portfolio has proven hits.

I agree. Tomb Raider will sell no matter what you think of it personally. And I completely disagree. This is the perfect time to buy low when the economy is in shambles.

Actually this is the best time to buy Eidos. Better now when it's cheap and you can get a good deal than when the company is thriving and the price is high.
Now Ubisoft was thinking of picking up Eidos but SquareEnix is just as good if not better.
This must be part of their strategy to capture more of the European and American markets.
I hope Eidos takes the deal not do something dumb like Tecmo.

Thirded. You don't get massive returns by buying high and selling high. CEOs are well aware of the risks. With the yen as strong as it is now, this might not be the last of these Japanese buyouts either.

Exactly what I mean. When the economy's better Eidos would be too expensive to consider. Now is the time to strike.

This definitely makes sense for both companies. Neither owns the market, or will even after the acquisition, but the unified company will be stronger immediately and moving into the future. Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts are the only real hits square has, but their online and publishing business structures can help the games Eidos makes. While I don't expect a slew of new properties I think there will be a lot of interesting things happening with the collective current collective properties the new company will have.

despite all the recent layoffs in our industry...sales are posting record numbers. Its just that game budgets are getting astronomical..
and I would love to see a tomb raider game with the Square treatment... could potentially be very cool..

Seriously?? The game industry has been rocking......anything you can do at home or rent is a GREAT place to be right now. Couldn't be a better time to do this.

So Eidos shares are on a low spike, Square, between the strength of the yen and their titles has had more liquids than they ever had since they merged with enix, they have a massive injection of further liquidity coming (new FF for PS3 is guaranteed to sell), and they obviously have some bloody good analysts if they offered 32 per share and the consequence was the shares going from 14 to 31 (that's some of the most accurate foresight I've seen in a while if they offered something 2.8% away from market response).
How is that exactly a bad time to buy a company that has franchises worth owning for a company that's not seen a shade of recession yet? :)

Enix and Eidos would share a very promising partnership as they have the same core values such as developping strong IPs and franchises. Also, in fact, Enix acknowledges the cultural diffenrences between asian and american markets, Eidos's well-known game portfolio offers Enix a great opportunity to have their share in the western market.
Looking forward to see the final decision from the London head office.

I would own that game. At least the Final Fantasy female characters wouldn't be shemale any longer. :)

correction: final fantasy male characters won't be shemale any longer. Their female characters are actually quite feminine.
