View Full Version : character head modelling without reference
istudios 02-12-2009, 03:21 AM hi i'm 17 and live in Nigeria. (u can close the page now if u want) i was a bit bored ... so i decided to model a head with only my imagination and see what it gave me.. i used polygon modelling and subdivision surfaces for everything.. i also took to some advice i saw on a tutorial on 3dm3.com , "making of Matrouk" (an invaluable resource), where the author stressed about eliminating symmetry from your model to give it more life. i would say he knew what he was talking about. having both sides of your model look the same makes it seem dead!!
i would like some criticism and to know whats wrong with the model and what i can add to give it more life part from what i'd get from anatomy reference...if u know what i mean?

Attached image didn't work...
I suggest just using something like imageshack (http://imageshack.us/) or Photobucket (httL://photobucket.com) or if you don't mind the hassel of digging out the image code from the html of a picasa-hosted image then picasa (picasa.google.com) instead of the using the attachment system here...
edit:
and just in case you do have a picasa album and don't know how to get the image code out:
here's an example:
<table style="width:auto;"><tr><td><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/11ppyS5XoZdWUBNPrSP0jQ?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_kyuBN4GsaYo/SYoL-m2_OYI/AAAAAAAAAgo/RyW1Z_TiFq8/s800/Fullscreen%20capture%20242009%2044227%20PM.jpg" /></a></td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/grogmcgee/Stuffs?feat=embedwebsite">Stuffs</a></td></tr></table>
That is the html code in the "Link to this Photo"
You can choose from a little drop down menu the size of the linked image (144, 288, 400, 800)
Then you need to remove most of that html code so that all you have left is what begins with <img src=" :
so
<img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_kyuBN4GsaYo/SYoL-m2_OYI/AAAAAAAAAgo/RyW1Z_TiFq8/s800/Fullscreen%20capture%20242009%2044227%20PM.jpg"
becomes:
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_kyuBN4GsaYo/SYoL-m2_OYI/AAAAAAAAAgo/RyW1Z_TiFq8/s800/Fullscreen%20capture%20242009%2044227%20PM.jpg
which in turn is wrapped by codes
{img}http://lh4.ggpht.com/_kyuBN4GsaYo/SYoL-m2_OYI/AAAAAAAAAgo/RyW1Z_TiFq8/s800/Fullscreen%20capture%20242009%2044227%20PM.jpg{/img}
But [ ] instead of { }
and voila

http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/2679/55743215eu7.jpgnow getting to details , the wrinkles on the forehead were simply made by chamfering an edge thus dividing it into 2, then another edge was added in between those 2 edges , then by pushing that one in, and adding a subdivision surface modifier or(turbosmooth for max users) i could have a wrinkle

http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/9503/13830466gx1.jpgi also figured if i moved around the vertices of the wrinkles to be flat like an unstressed pose. i could then use the wrinkled head model as a morph target or blendshape for animation

That's really good for something modeled without any reference. Is this supposed to be a stylised/cartoon like character, or is it supposed to be realistic?
If it's supposed to be realistic, then I think the nose is too large and the forehead is too low, the ears look too small as well.
Any chance you could post some wire images?
By the way, I love the way you've done the wrinkles :).

The method for the wrinkles can also be employed for folds in clothes, ears and other organic and soft body objects.
i simply wanted to show that certain details in a model dont really require the aid of third party detailing programs. I love Zbrush but dont use it as an excuse not to fully use the tools already in your modeling program unless u wanna save time.
besides using zbrush for the wrinkles would have involved the use of displacement maps or a high poly count
