Medunecer : Yes, I made pencil sketchs before painting. I had to submit them for agreement to the editor (producer?), first. So they could ask for modifications before colouring.

Nickz : I always use the same brushes, but I don't remember their names in english :/ First I use a pencil, 'enduit texturé' in French, and the round oil pastel (?).
