i need to have the wall marked in red in the picture to cast shadows only on the spheres and sawhorses but cant figure out how to do it

would i have to render it as another layer?

any help would be appreciated

Turn off Recieve Shadow on the other objects ? That should work.

depends which renderer and program you're using. My suggestion would be to create a shadows only light, no intensity, -1 value for shadow color, and then light link the objects you want shadowed
