Hello, sorry for my bad english.

I'm a beginner 3D modeler and animator, and at the moment creating a realistic human model for future animation. I'm facing a problem here with creating a realistic looking hair, but at the same time i need it to be relatively cheap to animate. What I've done so far was, I've created basic hair geometry in nurbs, and I was trying to use alpha maps to texture, however they didn't work. The best result I got was it was transparent where I needed it to be, but it had white line going on the edge. The more I tryed to fix it more I ruined it. So at the moment I've completelt ran out of the ideas what I've done wrong. Sorry forgot to mention... It wotked fine when I rendered it in Maya software but when I tried in mental ray it gave me that line on the edge. And I kinda need to render in mental ray as my skin shader is a mental ray shader.

Sorry if that kind of topic was already disscused in here somwhere I just could't find anything.

Try this see if it works.

If you created the hair texture map in Photoshop, I'd assume that you had 2 layers for that map, one background layer ( in white color, this is where the white edge from) and one hair layer over the the background color.

Just fill the background with a dark brown color, (base on your character's hair color, something little darker than the hair's mid tone). That may help you get rid of the white edge.

Also don't forget apply a map to the specular color, so specular won't show up on some transparent area.
