I'm interested in modeling body armour and weapons,I've been coming to the forums for about two years and frankly this place is both a wonderland and extremely intimidating.
could someone suggest the right software to start with,I've had a look a the various kinds used here...but the learning curve seems mindnumbingly steep

any help would be gratefully recieved

Try different ones out and see how they work for you. They all work the same way.

I would recommend the 30 day trial of XSI 7.01. Or you can use the MOD tool for free.

I agree with izze, XSI probley has the least steep of learning curve. And I'm not saying that because I'm some XSI fanboy either Maya is my primary package. But no matter what package you chose you are going have a lot of learning a experamtion to do. good luck.

I've heard nice things about SketchUp

Wings3d is free and pretty neat
Blender is free and has a massive community and bazillions of tutorials
