View Full Version : My First Model

Well, I've played around before and I made some completely geometric stuff several years back in another program (Rhino 3d), but I think this is basically the first time I've ever modelled anything from scratch other than a few "doodles" while trying to get a feel for the program. I need to fix the upper body proportions and posture and finish the head. Also, the view with the wireframe was put together in photoshop and looks a little wierd since it's showing the back splines also. It's not actually that messy, but I am still new to this, so they could still be off. I'll take some wireframe shots and put them up later to see if anyone has suggestions on that.

Hi EraserX,

I think so far you've done a really good job on your character. I just want to point out 2 things:

1. The arms are a bit too long,
2. Lower legs should be a bit more tilted, following the angle of upper legs (not necessarily perpendicular to the ground plane)
3. Some parts of the model is still a bit too squarish, especially the rear parts.

But, that depends on your concept of course. Maybe you're aiming for a character with long arms? :)

Made some more adjustments and I wanted to show a little closer view on the wireframe. Could anyone tell me what's wrong with it? I'm learning as I go and I tried to keep things organized looking, but I've basically just been doing what works.

Also, if anyone could point me towards a good tutorial for modeling heads, I'd be very grateful. I'd like to have this done in a manner that would be as easy to animate as possible.

Not bad.. as mentioned very squareish.. is that intentional? The proportions are a bit heroic ..the legs seem really long.

The squareness is not intentional, I'm just having trouble rounding things out and keeping the heroic build. So far, I've been modelling with no reference, but trying to keep the proportions similar to my own (except in better shape). It seems like it was much faster going to all this than trying to fix up the problem areas. Either the tools in A:M are slightly limited or I just don't know how to use them well enough yet, because I'm having a somewhat difficult time with a few areas. I don't intend to make him 100% anatomically corract, but there are some areas I'd like to get closer.

Looking good. I feel that the upper body is to short for the legs though. Either that or the waist is to high.

Anyone got any critiques, tips, or suggestions? I'd really like to get further into 3d work and I would appreciate any tips at all. Don't worry about being harsh. I can take it.

I'm still trying to hunt down a tutorial that will help with the head. I've heard that it's best to start with the mouth and work out, it's just really easy to get lost doing so and it would be nice to have some guidance.
