My thesis was about real-time indirect illumination.
I think HDR lighting is interesting too.

There'a book called "Advanced Lighting and Materials with Shaders" which is a great read. You could look through it. It's for programmers though, so you'll find heaps of code. I don't know if that's what you're looking for.

Write about what you know.

Write about what you have access of information to, and are interesting in learning.

Your best source of information are those people in the industry. Contact studios and see if you can interview some of their artists. Bring a tape recorded.

If you are writing about the importance of lighting for video games, try and talk to a Art Director. If it is film, a DOP. Trust me on this, they will love to talk to you about this subject and are your best source for information.
