View Full Version : tire problem
i am modeling a tire at the moment.
first i created a small part of the tire (picture: http://www.upart2.de/mav/rei1.jpg ).
then i made an array of 40 (or something like that) (picture: http://www.upart2.de/mav/rei2.jpg )
after that i attached all poly's to the first part and then i tried to use the bend modifier, but it doesn't work. my tire shape looks like an egg. (picture: http://www.upart2.de/mav/rei3.jpg).
i couldn't find my mistake in the tutorials, which were posted in this forum.
can somebody help me to make a "normal" tire?

not with bend.. there's another modifier for such.. PathDeform.
You'll need a circle as path ;)

nico's idea would work, but there are easier ways to accomplish what your trying to do, for example, start w/ a cylinder on it's side and give it the necessary itterations, move some verts, and extrude the threads.... or you could just always use a bump map and save polys -

You need to adjust your angle o your bend modifier. Play with it till it becomes streight also that tire looks a bit on the thin side.

yeah, that's because it's only the half of a tire. i didn't use the symetry modifier ;)

next 3d world - issue 41 (if memory serves) there should be a q&a I wrote in there about creating a tyre (render attached)
If you're desperate, please mail me privately on pete.draper@xenomorphic.co.uk and I can run you through the process

well i guess since you already finished the tire, this is a bit late, but it looks, from your first pictures, that you had non-uniformly scaled the initial chunk of tire, perhaps to make it taller. so when u applied the bend modifier that scaling translated up the stack and gave you a scaled tire.
although i could be wrong, that's what it looks like to me. so if u wanted i think all you would have to do would be to reset the xform on either the single segment or the long strip of segments, then collapse back to editable poly, and THEN apply the bend modifier :)

Bit late now but a possibly quicker route on your array
Do original piece, move clone, border weld, move clone, border weld, move clone border weld..etc..... consequently your pieces are:
1,2,4,8 etc bigger... your current tyre is relative simple but on more complex threads this can make quite a difference. :)

Too late I know but for anyone ealse this is a really good tutorial for making a tyre. Usind a tube to start with seems to make more sense than using path deform or bend modifiers.
Hope it's of some help
