Hi guys!

As I am currently on the lookout for a new fun project to work on (feature/commercial/onsite or remote) I wanted to show you my latest reel featuring some of the animation work I did last year at Double Negative in London on "Hellboy II: The Golden Army".

It was truly an amazing project to work on with an amazing talented and fun bunch of people. :D

http://www.arne3d.com/newreel/Hellb_reel_coverimages.jpg

Reel breakdown:

Shot 1 - Hellboy fights Robots
Responsible for all the animation. Hellboy's CG robot arm and the robots fighting in the background.

Shot 2 - Hellboy stabs robot
Animated the robot and Hellboy's CG robot arm.

Shot 3 - Hellboy stabs robot (cont.)
Animated the robot falling to the ground.

Shot 4 - Abe walks through the Troll Market
Responsible for staging and animating all the pixies except the one that gets eaten.

Shot 5 - Hellboy and Abe at the Troll Market
Staged and animated all the pixies in the shot.

Shot 6 - Crawler-head robot
Animated the crawler-head robot throughout the shot.

QuickTime movie can be viewed here (http://www.arne3d.com/newreel/) with a mirror here (http://www.akdesign.no/newreel/).

Enjoy!
Arne :)

Very nice man, really enjoyed that last shot. What kind of software where you using? WHat kind of time lines where you on for these shots?

Keep up the solid work.

We used Maya on the animation and the shots on the reel I completed during a 5 month period. A few weeks on each shot, with revisions, tweaks, blocking, refining and polishing.

All the shots feature keyframed animation and every little mechanic wiggle and wobble was animated by hand. The cogs inside the robots were mostly procedural and automated animation but had some manual tweaking here and there.

The Troll Market shots have between 30-40 individual pixies in each shot, so it was a lot of work put into those as well to create a busy and living ambience.

Hellboy 2 was such a fun movie to watch with all those far-out creatures, and oodles of eye candy. I was amazed at how many extra little details were in the troll market that never even got screen time, were so briefly seen, or far off into the background that they weren't even noticed. I'm sure it was a ball to work on that film. I imagine doing the animation of the golden army soldiers putting themselves back together was pretty involved. Great job -especially considering the budget you folks had to work within. :buttrock:

Arne, our hero!!!

I was wondering which shots you were working on. He, he, twas about time you put them on CG talk. Man, you sure got some of the coolest shots to work on, especially the self-assembling head. Congratulations! Not many animation students have the chance to join such a great gig as their first project. We'll sure be watching your work in the future :)

Rock on, my friend!

just brilliant ...

am not magnify when am saying that the robots army animation is on of the best character animation shots I have ever seen at any movie ... my opinion at least :)

the Crawler-head shot was out of imagination, my jaw droped down when I watched it ... and was wondering who is that brilliant who did the animation, I guess am feeling lucky to know him now :D

I was looking for any breakdowns or screen shots, maybe also some more of your past work as your site just containing the reel and your short ...

greet work again .... my fully regards

Wow! Thanks! Didn't expect to get plugged on the front page. Let's hope the servers I use can cope with the download traffic... lol!

And thank you for your all your positive feedback. Appreciate it :)

I really can't take credit for the staging of the last shot. Aysha Madina, a fellow animator at DNeg, worked on the staging of that shot for a few weeks with the riggers, also to solve a lot of the technical stuff. So a lot of props to her :) There were four other animators on that shot as well, animating all the bits-n-bobs rolling about, background/foreground robots etc. I primarily focused on the crawler animation.

Ales, thanks man! Hope you're doing well. Your short turned out awesome!

Fo those of you who want to see a little more behind-the-scenes stuff, I recommend you get the Blu-Ray/DVD as it has hours of cool stuff on it :)

DNeg has also posted a Hellboy II breakdown demo on some of the shots on AWNtv. (http://www.awntv.com/videos/hellboy-ii-the-golden-army-dneg-breakdown-demo)

Very nice work and yer the Blueray kicks ass. Also saw the shot breakdown at 3Dec last year in london.

I`m still pissed this did not get an oscar nod as it kicks The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button ass when it comes to SFX ( even Dark Knight - dose not have the flair SFX this film does - just better film overall )

I loved that scene, I wasn't even thinking about how good the CG was when I was seeing it. I just got drawn into it. There was no clear line where the live action stopped and the CG started.

Hey man! Thanks, appreciate it! It was a pleasure working with you too, hope to do it again sometime, and thanks for making the animation look good on the big screen :)

I'm on a Mac and it looks fine here. I know there is an issue on PC's though when playing H.264 videos in QuickTime, as they appear very washed out and grey.

I found a tutorial on how to fix it so PC's display the video correctly:
1. In QuickTime click on the Edit tab and go to Preferences.
2. In Preferences open the Advanced tab and there is a selection for Video or Direct X.
3. Click on Safe mode (GDI only), Apply, then OK.
4. Restart QuickTime, and videos should play fine and not as grey as before.

I'm on a Mac so I can't try if this works, but I hope so :)

Are you a animation mentor student, if I may ask?
Yup! I sure am. Had no character animation experience prior to AM, and Hellboy was my first gig after graduating. I think that says a lot about the program. It works

Hi,

I really like the crawling bot head shot alot. Probably 1 of my fav shot in the entire movie.

I remember attending a short talk by Kath and Graham on the vfx portion of the film, Although the bulk of the talk was about the liquid/fire simulation, i remembered they mentioned the usage of houdini's digital asset to propagate the whole scene with loads of clockwork bots but only having to calculate only 1 set of proxy mesh.

Was the crawling head shot or the clockwork bot fight sequence you handled purely animated with Maya or was there a mixture of houdini for the bg animation?

Everything in these shots was purely hand animated in Maya. The robots characters had hundreds of controls to animate, and that they were complex rigs is almost an understatement... :)

What a luxury have you posting this. Im not a fan of the comics based movies...but i love the Hellboy movies, great CG overall, and funny movies. About your reel....what can i say!

Cheers.

I'm not a Hellboy fan but I really enjoyed this film purely due to the artistic vision involved. I really appreciate the work you and your team did for this feature. Nice work! I hope you find something as rewarding and artistically interesting to work on in the future.

Fantastic work!!!

I absolutely love the movie, Guillermo's imagination never ceases to amaze me, very inspiring stuff.

I was just curious to whether Double Negative approached you? or if you already had a job with them to begin with?
