Hi, I'm trying to make an effect with light in 3dstudio. I have been looking for a picture that shows the effect for a few hours now, but I don't seam to find it. So I'll jsut try to explain it :D

You know the rays of light you can see right before sunset on a cludy day? I wan't to make those in 3d studio. But instead of them going down from clouds into the ground. In the background. I want them comming from the midle of the picture to the camera. I'm planing to make som abstract shapes to stop the light at some places but let it pass through here and there, this way creating a great looking effect.

If you understood that, then I'm impressed :P

I'm pretty new with 3d studio so please explain thrughly

Thanks in advance

I suppose what you want is volume light. Look it up in the max help or have a look at this tutorial:

I forgot to write that. I have tried Volume light, but didn't get it the way I like it.

The CG talk logo is the closest I could come to a picture with the effect. The ligth that comes from the back and going forward to you.

I know how to make it in photoshop, but I have no clue have to make it in 3d studio. I know it's posible, I have seen it been done. Just can't remember where I saw the picture :/

Alright, have a look at Render effects-Lens Effects-Rays.
But if you want objects to block those rays you have to go with volume light. Try putting a noise map in he projection slot of the light turn, on shadows with a big shadow map, and let the light shine right into you face

I've tried some more with the volume light, but all I get is a gray screen:surprised

Here's a screenshot

Can you spot what I'm doing wrong?

Use shadow map instead of area shadows, they are the only shadows which work with max´s volume light.

Turn on Far attenuation in the light rollout and adust the start little above the object radius and the far whre you want it.
