View Full Version : rotate canvas easily and quickly??
Petrus 06-30-2003, 05:47 PM Is there a way to rotate the canvas by pressing some key combination and moving the mouse... or something similar. Image -> Rotate Canvas -> Arbitrary... and entering a value isn't my idea of working smoothly :\
I would like to be able to rotate the canvas i much the same way I do when I draw with a pencil and paper. Please don't just tell me to use pencil and paper instead. I own a Wacom Intous2, and I want to use it.
If this is not possible, is there some plugin for PS 7 that adds this function? Is there any other software, that is as good as PS, wich has this function??
Many thanks in advance!!!

Ctrl+T (or apple+T) will get you the instant transform tool, which is not rotate canvas, but if what i figured out you wanted was right, that will be the solution for ya...

Unfortunately this is not a good working practice in digital graphics. The main reason is that whenever you rotate something from its original position it has to resample the image to its new rotation. do this 10-20 times and your image quality is severely degraded. I strongly advise against using this rotate canvas method more than a few times. Unless of course you are only sketching and it can afford to be rough.

Hmmm.... is there a quick way to make all layers linked? Otherwise only the active layer is rotaded :\
Is there no program out there that resamples the rotation from the original image each time, so it's only degraded once eventhough the image is rotated many times?
((I guess this would be quite CPU and memory intensive for large images, with many layers and many operations made on it. The program would have to reapply all the changes made since the image was opend.... :\
But hey, computers are getting quite fast and can be equipped with a lot of ram, so it should be possible.))
Anyway... I have seen a design student work with some painting program that allowed him to rotate the image while he was working.... unfortunally I don't remember the name of the software.... but I think it was something like "Paint". It had millions of functions that could be accessed through pop-up text menues. Any Idea what software it is??

I agree with Ian about this.
The app ya might be thinkin' of is "Painter". Corel i believe.
The only time i would believe rotating you image repeatedly would be if you were using a Vector app like XaraX, or Illustrator... or any of the other ones i'm neglecting to mention. ;)

Painter allows you to do this,... it is not the same as rotating the image and you will not lose quality. It's actually a very nice feature to have,... I think the default keystroke is space-alt or space-ctrl,... double clicking returns it to straight.
As for Photoshop,... I don't know any way you can do this without losing quality.

another option would be to wait until the new notebook tablets that just came out become affordable - just like a graphic tablet except you draw right onto the screen of your laptop. roughly $2K+ in stores now...
That will eliminate this problem altogether.
