Hi all,

Although I know this question is more to the artistic side of 3D, but i would still like to ask anyone for some sort of idea/ techniques/ tips on making an interesting night lighting. My project is due in a few days and i hope that if anyone can help me out on this.

My setting is basically something like Warcraft 3 Orc's Ending. After examining it, I notice two things, A huge white light coming from the side (out of camera) and Green lights (with decay rate) in the cracks of the ground. I wanted to mimic something like this but without the green lights...But i could not get the right setup. Can anyone suggest me the correct way of doing this night lighting ( decay, type of light, light placements, shadow attributes, intensity, and COLOR ). I am hoping not to use mental ray or ray tracing because i do not have the luxury of rendering power and time.

Any feedback is highly welcomed.
Thanks

Btw. I'm using maya

I would start with a low-level blue distantlight for the moon. It should have very smooth, dark blue shadows. No light decay. Then I would place around my characters/specular objects bright, spec-only lights to get nice highlights. In the scene I would also throw around negative lights dimmig background elements etc. After rendering, I would add glows around the highlights and desaturate the scene.
