Comments:
This is my main final entry image. It should capture the style of an advertising in a magazine for Mechwarriors or a poster or something like that. Keep in mind, that the Battletech is quite an old invention, and my ad should match in there.

Description
My Entry is a cutaway of the Vulture (Mad Dog) Battlemech, known from the Battletech Universe and Mechwarrior Games.
As Reference i mainly used the "blueprint" from FASA, which illustrate a half cutaway vulture from orthographic front view. As additional reference for the 3D look of the model i used Artworks mainly from classicbattletech.com

Programs i used for this entry are: Maya, Mental Ray and Photoshop.
I think i worked on an average 2 to 3 hours a day (sometimes more, sometimes less) on this entry, barring the last two weeks, where i had nearly no time for this.
Thanks for watching! Thanks for all your comments and thanks for that great challenge!

This is my entry for CGTalk Hardcore Modeling Challenge #18, Cutaway. I used Autodesk Maya and worked on it over 120 hours. I'm, as you can guess, huge fan of One Piece. I wanted to create the Thousand Sunny using blueprint drawings by Eiichirō Oda, and screenshots which I collected from the anime, One Piece. All references can be found in my blog.http://thousand-o-sunny.blogspot.com/

Hey Guys, This is my entry for the latest HMC, I've used 3ds Max to create the model and it took approximately 30 - 50 hours, I've learned a few new handy techniques and approaches to various kinds of shapes and had a great deal of fun in the process.
Thanks everyone, Hope you've enjoyed it!

For my first Hardcore Modelling Challenge, #18 Cutaway, I have chosen a bicycle hub gear. The best references I could find were also for the most complex, the Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14. My references can be found here:
http://www.rohloff.de/en/download/productpicture/index.html
http://www.rohloff.de/en/technical/speedhub/funktional_principle/index.html
The Rohloff logo is the property of Rohloff AG.
I worked on this for a month, putting in around 3 - 4 hours most days so I guess it has taken me around 120 hours. My entry was entirely modelled, textured, lit and rendered with Cinema 4D R10.5.
Thank you to those who have given encouragement and have left kind comments in my WIP thread along the way.

Due to personal problems i didnt have enough time to complete my original choice of model for this challenge. I therefore chose to do a cutaway model of a WW2 air to ground rocket. Less complicated than my first choice, but therefore more important to do well.
Thanks to all who supported me in this, and congrats to all on the high standard of finished work.

DESCRIPTION
MiTi Oil-Free Turbocharger
MiTi has developed the world’s first completely oil-free turbocharger using compliant foil air bearings. The low powerloss of the lubricant and oil-free foil bearings overcomes turbolag associated with other bearing designs to increase engine responsiveness and efficiency. The oil-free design is environmentally preferred since it prevents contaminating engine oil from mixing with air entering the piston cylinders. This design helps reduce engine emissions especially during the cold startup phase. Premature bearing failures due to high speed and high operating temperatures are eliminated. Oil supply and scavenge lines are also eliminated resulting in simplified engine installation, reduced engine oil leak potential and lower parts count.

DESCRIPTION:
The Concorde is the first, and so far the only supersonic airliner. It was a landmark in luxury and technical excellence in passenger air travel. Concorde is also an icon of what can be accomplished if we go beyond conventional thinking. What is really amazing is that the airliner was designed in the 50's and 60's and still nothing can touch it today. I loved the idea of finding out what made it tick and how it was arranged inside.

This is actually my first submitted peice for the HMC, though I have attemted a few others erlier. I wish I could find more time through the period, so I could texture and add more details to my model, but all in all, and thinking about the time I have spent on it, I am quite satesfied. I am not sure how much I used on it, but I don't think it was more then about 15-20 hours. Everything was made in 3d studio max.
The best of luck to everyone, and I hope I can compete with you next time!

DESCRIPTION
This is a cutaway of a high-bypass turbofan engine seen on many common passenger airliners such as the 747, specifically a Pratt and Whitney PW4000. You can find out more about it here. (http://www.pw.utc.com/vgn-ext-templating/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=b70e34890cb06110VgnVCM1000004601000aRCRD)
I produced the whole thing in Modo, using subdivision surfaces for the majority of it.
In total I estimate I spent around 10 days (@ 8 hours a day) on this, in one or two hours chunks. Sometimes I found it difficult to get a lot done when I knew I could only work on it for an hour at a time, because a lot of time was spent deciphering the reference I had and working out exactly what I needed to build.
The actual modelling was fairly easy since it's mostly cylindrical, so I used a lot of edge extruding and planar scaling, and a bit of radial sweeping. I intend to rebuild a lot of parts by re-sweeping with more segments, so I can use a lower subdivision level - currently the entire model comes in at 9.3 million tris...
Thanks to all the guys that provided reference and technical explanations in the WIP thread, it was all very useful stuff and helped me get my head around this complex, yet actually quite simple mechanism!
Cheers,
-Ross

Atari VCS 2600 - The classic console and all it's innards. There are a few parts that are intentionally broken. That's because I was modeling my personal console including the parts we broke over the last 2 1/2 decades. Everything you see (except the groovy faux 70's wood grain :D ) is modeled.
Its been a long time since I completed a project to this scale in LightWave, I've been obsessed with ZBrush for a while, so it felt great getting back in the swing. I've got layer upon layer of cutaway objects so make sure you look deep. Thanks to everyone who stopped by to visit my WIP, the support really helps in getting through these challenges on time. Description
My Entry is a cutaway of the Vulture (Mad Dog) Battlemech, known from the Battletech Universe and Mechwarrior Games.
As Reference i mainly used the "blueprint" from FASA, which illustrate a half cutaway vulture from orthographic front view. As additional reference for the 3D look of the model i used Artworks mainly from classicbattletech.com
http://www.classicbattletech.com/images/gallery/Reinforcements_Cover@800x600.jpg
http://www.classicbattletech.com/images/gallery/MadDog_Cutaway@full.jpg
Thanks to Hypernaut and the battletech.info (http://www.battletech.info/forum/index.php) community for some references, especially to Vulture_MaxPaint (http://www.battletech.info/forum/member.php?u=1229), who helped me to some high res images of the blueprint.
More references can be found here:
http://www.classicbattletech.com/index.php?action=text&page=BattleMech_Technology
http://www.twobt.de/655.0.html
And of course, the original Blueprints from FASA:
http://www.amazon.com/Omni-Mech-Blueprints-Battletech-1661/dp/1555601480/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1228484284&sr=8-1

Hello,
what amazing uploads, well done!
What exactly is HCR modeling? What does it stand for and how is it done typically?
Thanks.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello,
sorry about that silly question, I thought it was a special modeling method. Suppose we all need to ask silly questions and maybe all questions are, at some rate, ignorant.
Sorry for my ignoramus-ness
regards, and best of luck to all applicants.

I believe HCR stands for HardCoRe. It's not a special method of modeling if that's what you're thinking. The focus of the competition is to make really detailed models using whichever modeling program you wish.

Best Vehicle - Huang Liangyu - Its a tight one between this and Johannes' Mech, but I think Huang's looks slightly more like a real one taken apart, but I admit its a tight call.
Best Diorama - Menthena Schmidt - I just love how such a fantastic subject has been brought to life. Its what Cut-aways should be all about. I've never seen the series before, but it just looks alive.
and the big one of course:
Best Model - Ross Mansfield - Wow!

Comments:
This is my main final entry image. It should capture the style of an advertising in a magazine for Mechwarriors or a poster or something like that. Keep in mind, that the Battletech is quite an old invention, and my ad should match in there.

Another beauty Image i want to show is a stylization done by a friend of mine in photoshop, based on the clay render, which will be linked further down.

Ok, this was my first try with shadow maps in an animation. I messed up something, so they are flickering. But i think i now learned how to set them up correctly.

Description
My Entry is a cutaway of the Vulture (Mad Dog) Battlemech, known from the Battletech Universe and Mechwarrior Games.
As Reference i mainly used the "blueprint" from FASA, which illustrate a half cutaway vulture from orthographic front view. As additional reference for the 3D look of the model i used Artworks mainly from classicbattletech.com
http://www.classicbattletech.com/im...ver@800x600.jpg (http://www.classicbattletech.com/images/gallery/Reinforcements_Cover@800x600.jpg)
http://www.classicbattletech.com/im...utaway@full.jpg (http://www.classicbattletech.com/images/gallery/MadDog_Cutaway@full.jpg)
Thanks to Hypernaut and the battletech.info (http://www.battletech.info/forum/index.php) community for some references, especially to Vulture_MaxPaint (http://www.battletech.info/forum/member.php?u=1229), who helped me to some high res images of the blueprint.
More references can be found here:
http://www.classicbattletech.com/in...Mech_Technology (http://www.classicbattletech.com/index.php?action=text&page=BattleMech_Technology)
http://www.twobt.de/655.0.html
And of course, the original Blueprints from FASA:
http://www.amazon.com/Omni-Mech-Blu...28484284&sr=8-1 (http://www.amazon.com/Omni-Mech-Blueprints-Battletech-1661/dp/1555601480/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1228484284&sr=8-1)

It's funny Johannes. My boss is an old school Battletech pen&paper guy and he looked over my shoulder at your entry and asked "Oh wow, who made the vulture?" You definitely nailed it, congratulations.
Thanks everyone for the great contest. I never thought I'd hold a candle to the level of competition shown here. To actually win one of the categories, well I guess all the hard work was worth it. Thanks again, I look forward to many more great challenges.
Grats guys!
Everyone had great entries.

Hehe, what a cool coincidence, Wyatt, and its cool he liked it. I already hat one "hardcore-battletech-fan" complaining about the advertising-style-presentation, because the Vulture is a Clan-Mech and apparently clan-companys don't advertise, though i don't know, why they shouldn't. Anyway thanks for the comment, its always nice to know that people like ones creation :D
