Rebecca, first off, Thanks for moderating such an amazing anatomy forum. I haven't been posting regularly here, but I visit often. I decided to start my own sketchbook thread where I will posting my digital paintings, 3d renders, and also scanned copies of my sketches. I am learning anatomy, so be harsh on your comments so that I can improve my work

Started using the demo soldier in zbrush, I would like some comments on this.I want to post it in my gallery after I receive some comments

Ok guys, here's more of my artwork...

two speed paints to start off with, both done in half an hour
http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee179/vikramvr/girl_smallsize.jpg

Another Pacino, 85 percent 3d, and 15 percent photoshop, the hair is retouched to the look I wanted to achieve.
http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee179/vikramvr/final2.jpg

Tarzan
http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee179/vikramvr/tarzan1.jpg

This hip hop guy was done for my university reel..Mainly to study lighting.Rendered in xsi
http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee179/vikramvr/HIPHOP.jpg

My wolverine next gen character.
http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee179/vikramvr/Wolverine.jpg

And lastly, and update on the Afro Gorilla guy, the pants still need some work on them. The body is made of stone.

http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee179/vikramvr/pants.jpg

I'll post updates on the afro gorilla here, and that's the only thing I have time to work on at the moment, he's still going to have a hoodie, and airforce one nike shoes. I would be making a low poly game character out of him.

Hi Vikram,

Great sketchbook! I especially like the first portrait - great lighting! Tarzan is looking good too. :) Is the first Pacino part 3D too? The details are photorealistic, but I think it looks rather flat as a whole. I am guessing it probably has more to do with a camara flash being used in the reference image, though. Keep it up!

Thank you kasana. Heozart, yea the first Al Pacino turned out a little flat. It was done a long time ago, and I kind of wandered away from the main lighting and concentrated more on the details. Spirit Dreamer..Ty, I'm glad you liked the little girl and the tarzan sculpt. Here's a big size render of Afro Gorilla Man. The pants are still a WIP, but the torso is complete. I'll be making Nike airforce one shoes for him.

I really like the greytone painting of the little girl:)
"tarzan" - good work but I wish for better hair detail on it.
Gorillaman is very interesting .. how about making the wrinkles less rounded especially the bottom left one above the foot. And the shader is adding a lot of extra depth to the wrinkles .. I hope you are checking references..

Hi Vikram! After Seeing whole of your sketchbook......... ( (http://forums.cgsociety.org/misc.php?do=getsmilies&wysiwyg=1&forumid=0#) ) ......... my verdict is that your works Rock! Daniel was awsome though Pacino got some flatness but the best part are the hands you ve worked on.
Keep Rolling them.
And i agree with Richa that those wrinkles arent looking that much convincing. Looking for some references will be very much helpful.

vikramvr
02-10-2009, 07:15 PM
Hey guys, Thanks thanks, yea the pant is still a WIP. Yes I am checking references, I never work without them. I think it's also the shader that deceives the eye. Will do another pass and show you guys an update.

Hi guys, Here's a quick paint of Lara Croft. Took some 4 hours to paint this. Painted in Art Rage. I don't know if any of you guys use that software, but I feel it to be a lot better than Corel Painter and photoshop. Let's you use a reference photograph, and also lets you trace an image. Pretty neat interface as well. I highly recommend Art Rage to all you guys.

Angelina, Grishin Thank you for dropping by. NR43, this was a quick paint and I wanted to capture the mood of the painting, and I seem to have lost my hold on colours. I'll keep this in mind for my next paint. Anyway, another day with ArtRage, and I did 5 sketches, 4 of them, copies of Ben Miller poses, and the other is a copy of a sketch by Siju Thomas. I'm trying to make solid forms in the drawings.

Hey Vikram!!

That greyscale painting is very nice. Something I want to ask here - I am sure you use a pen tablet, if yes, then which one is that and how much time since you are using it?

vikramvr
02-27-2009, 01:32 PM
Hi Deepam, Thanks for your reply. Yes I use a wacom tablet. It is a 9x12 intous 3 wacom tablet. I think the Wacom is the most useful tool when it comes to painting or sculpting. There are cheaper tablets as well, like the i-ball and the wacom bamboo, but they lack the pressure sensitivity of an intous 3. I highly recommend this for you incase you dont use it already. I've been using a wacom for close to 3 years now.

Hello guys, got some updates on the Afro gorilla today. I made him into a realtime model. Have a look at some closeup's of the sculpt and also a render of the low res with base textures painted out.

http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee179/vikramvr/Face_subds-1.jpg

http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee179/vikramvr/pantscloseup.jpg

http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee179/vikramvr/Bodyclose.jpg

7208 tris in total. Poly's still need to reduced and spaced properly...

http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee179/vikramvr/maxsnapwire.jpg

Here's a render in max. Used 2 area lights, and a skylight. Rendered in mentalray with Final Gather. The textures are very basic, no spec map

lol ape rapper! hehe - nice one. One thing that keeps bugging me are the pants at the belt - they feel so thin - as if they're made of silk and yet the folds on the legs imply a thick denim-like fabric... it's just not quite convincing and considering it's place on the model and the colour contrast with the hair at his waist it draws the eye quite a bit towards it... Just masking the belt area in Zbrush, inverting the mask and using deformations tab to inflate it a bit would make all the difference IMHO.

Deepam
03-05-2009, 05:30 AM
Hey Vikram, the render is pretty nice!

Agree with Magdalena about the belt area, also tightening that portion may be good.
Are you going for some serious texturing as well? If yes, then it will be great to do some detailed work on head hairs as well, coz they attract in first look. Just my thought may be wrong. ;)

NR43
03-05-2009, 05:49 AM
LOL make him break-dance!

vikramvr
03-06-2009, 04:22 AM
Dadela, Thank you for that reply and awesome observation. At first I couldn't understand your comment on the waist, and I looked at some references of pants and then understood what you meant. Yes, indeed that is going to make a lot of difference, and I also think that the pants should start below the bulky area of the hip muscle..I'll post updates soon.

Deepam, Thank you for your reply, yes I would be working on the hair. I'm not sure if I'll be adding alphas to the hair. The hair area is big in this, and it will show, if hair alphas are added. Any suggestions on this?

NR43...Break dance...I was planning to have him in an elvis style pose with a mic in hand. I don't know what the client has in mind.

And guys, my company is officially shutting down today, and I am jobless...It's quite sad thinking that we had a great team here and it all ends so abruptly.

HEY ...Vikram..:)

I like the gorilla rapper..wish his head were bigger though..i'm not into the tiny heads on a huge body thing that's become the style as of lately..but that's just me..old fashioned I guess..LOL..:)
That old guy you just posted is AMAZING...to my eye anyway..On the fully rendered with color version..top one,..Maybe a tad more work on the top edge of the skull, and the areas leading up to that edge..look a little flat .especally when you isolate that edge and the areas leading up and into it from the rest of the head...I like the way the edge on the shoulders look..The outter edges have alot of variation to them, making them look as though they are a rounded volume..Maybe the same variation or something simaler for the top edge of the skull..Just a passing thought that might be useful to you in pushing it further.
Anyway GREAT work..Very inspiring..LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING..MORE

really nice work on the old man there! I think a nice sss shader and better eyeballs would give the model way more justice in max though... even just doing some photo eyes in PS in post would make him look more alive - right now the eyes are cartoony in comparison to the realistic sculpt... Keep it up!

vikramvr
03-27-2009, 08:44 PM
Hi Glenn thank you very much for dropping by and taking the time to write the comment..I'll definitely work on it. The Gorilla rapper was done for a client, and unfortunately, it stirred some controversy at zbrushcentral for not being politically correct. It was actually done for a client and he wanted it that way.

Magda thank you. Yes I tried some tests with the sss. I'll work on it and post another render. Eyes seem to be a very complicated thing to deal with and getting it to look right seems to be a very hard task to accomplish.

Nice work Vikram! Specially the portrait of an old man!
The left (of the viewer) ear seems to be bizzare or is it just looks to me as compared to the other one. Anyways, first class work and nice skin render!

vikramvr
03-30-2009, 06:09 PM
Hi bhaskar, thank you for your reply. I'm glad you liked it. I don't really know about the weirdness of the ear.. I think it's the light playing with the sss. I have an updated version of the same in my cgtalk portfolio. I've tried to match the right ear to the thickness of the left.

Oh Amrut Raju, your reply hadn't popped up when I typed in this..Thanks..That's something to do with the epidermal or subdermal scatter radius. If I soften those areas out, it seems to eat away the details of the normal map. So it's either sharp normal map or soft skin. I decided to balance the two. That's the reason for the sharp normal map details on the chin and the under eye. I'll have to find ways of solving that issues in the future.

Hey, Vikram!

Love the old dude. Nice expression and I like the waterry eyes. Do the eyes have a different color or do they just look like that with this lighting? I've a classmate whose one eye is less saturated than the other, so also different eyes. I guess it's possible then!
One little thing that would make it even more realistic is some facial hair. You know, that little, tiny, soft hair. Just a suggestion, the piece looks great as it is. Might come in handy in future pieces maybe :)

Cheers!

vikramvr
04-01-2009, 08:50 PM
Thank you for the reply razz. Glad you liked the old man. I will definitely keep in mind the facial hair for the next render. The eyes are both green. I think its the chromatic abberation that makes it look like that i think. Wow, you have a classmate with one eye less saturated? That's awesome!!!

Hello guys, some more update on the Dominance war. Wanted to post it here.

http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee179/vikramvr/lion08.jpg

I managed to bring in all my subtools in one file, and rendered it. It is quite surprising that zbrush was able to render it. There is a total of 50 subtools.

The only thing that excites me right now is the thought of converting this into low poly. There's still some minor work remaining on it, but I think the major load of the work is done, and I am starting to get satisfied with the results.

Wow, that is an awesome concept! I am not sure about the kneeling position, though. It probably isn't very comfy to stay like that for a long time. Is he able to stretch his legs?

bhaskar

Hi Vikram,
Congrats on your character. It has been fleshed out very well and love the details as well.
Though i agree with Heozart on the kneeling part. The posture looks very uncomfortable and also as you ve sculpted him straight and given wrinkles on his knees accordingly, those wrinkles are still present while the knee is bent.
Be careful abt the area where the leg is submerged with the lion torso. Feels like the mesh is floating around there.
And finally the flying bullet magazine lines (dont know what they call) are looking obsolete. Obsolete as in they ll be finished with a single shot of firing. I guess You need to show as if the bullets will be never ending and that ll make him kick ass and more powerful than now.
Those are my suggestions and i hope you ll consider them accordingly to ur time constraint.
Best of luck and looking for more updates.

Guys, Thank you for your replies, and I apologize for replying late. I've been tied up with a load of other things

Bhaskar, Heozart - The kneeling position was my concern in the beginning too. However, according to my back story, the guy is dead, and has been brought back to life as an android. Moreover, his legs do not work, and hence any position is the same. Only thing though, without the backstory, it might look a bit odd. The good part this year is that, we need to submit our story along with the other textures and beauty shots. So I think this might be a good explanation for his position. The bottom line is getting something different. This is a position a very few people would opt for. So, I think this position might be justified.

The bullet holds, yes, thats a great idea. I'll try to fix them up into the armour so that it looks endless.

Here is a turnaround of the character.

Vikramvr...OUTSTANDING...:applause:

Definitly unique....Reminds me of the Borg mixed in with a little of the style of Giger the guy who designed the Alian creature..:)

Question...Did you merge all of those subtools in Z Brush, and if yes, did you merge them all at once..Just curious...I would be afraid to merge that many at one time, for fear it would crash my program...:D

Anyway, ..GREAT JOB and it was a real pleasure and learning experience seeing it's developement along the way....:arteest:
OH..and that pose he's in....I LIKE IT..Like rideing a horse pose..makes sense to me...:)

Hi Glen, Thanks for your reply, Glad you like the character.

No, I did not merge the subtools. They are all separate. Please visit my DW thread (link in my signature). That is a better collection of the WIP images than here.

Hello guys, haven't posted much in past few weeks. Finally got the time to do some sculpting, this time a female face. The smile and the hair took the longest time to sculpt. Here is a render.

Hello guys!!hows everyone here doing??Haven't been visiting much as I've been busy with freelance stuff. After my hard disk crashed and I lost all my work, I haven't found time to do any personal artwork. However now I am participating in the HMC 21. I would be doing a 20's female aviator, sort of mixed with steampunk. Here are some WIP's. What do you guys think?

Hey Vikram, great progress on that aviator.
Hope you will be making backups as from now on ;)
(I'm paranoid about that really, I have everything on DVD, USB sticks, a 2nd HD and an online backup system. )

razz
08-10-2009, 01:15 PM
Yup, backups are awesome :D
Now, what's bothering me about the aviator are the folds. Gather as much reference as you can to make them convincing. There's a tutorial on folds at Gnomonology (http://gnomonology.com/tutorial/343) that might be useful. At least the result of it looks great, hopefully it teaches something. Be sure to check the scale of the items also, for example, the gun looks too small.
Good luck finishing it!

vikramvr

Thanks Johan, I have started to take backups already. Razz, I actually modelled the folds with a real jacket reference. Anyway, i'll look into it again..thanks.

Here is an update on the character. I modelled the jetpack, and the shoes. Hope you guys like it.

http://img8.imageshack.us/img8/3932/turnaround.jpg (http://img8.imageshack.us/i/turnaround.jpg/)

I am still concerned about the pose. I am looking for a simple yet powerful pose for this character. Any suggestions?

razz
08-20-2009, 11:52 AM
I like it! Not sure if I have any great suggestions about the pose, but I'd take into consideration that the jet pack is damn heavy. It does look that way, so I suppose the pose should somehow reflect that. If she'll be standing on the ground, that is. If not, maybe something like THIS (http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/1906/72gunboobs.jpg)? Might not be so simple though :)
Keen on seeing how this will turn out!

vikramvr
08-22-2009, 10:33 AM
Hi Razz, thank you for the reply. I decided to keep her on the ground, and since she is a queen, i did not want to go for an elaborate pose. So here it is.

Hope you guys like it.

Great jobbb!! The overall aspect is very good, the proportions and anatomy are working..and that's no easy task. So...there are only three little details (in the version with little cloth) that iMO could be better, and that is:

the lack of definitions in the base of the chest;
the top muscles of the legs are over defined;
the knee isnīt correct (anatomy);

But realy, this model has much more things to praise that things to critic.

Congratulations, keep the nice sculpting!

Hi Vikram, great updates! That backpack looks amazing. One little crit I have in general: you seem to make some of the details too crisp: for example the folds in the shirt and the muscles above the knee. I think the overall look would improve if you toned them down. It's just a minor crit. Keep going!

Good job, Vikram! Your normal map seems to be working really well. A bit more specular might help the hair. The bandage seems pretty thin- almost painted-on. The boots could use a bit of variation in specularity for contrast between the original leather surface and stain/damage. Look forward to seeing more updates on this..

Hello guys. I received a mail yesterday from a Polish guy, directing me to this link (You probably might need to translate the link from Polish to English) http://graffika.pl/viewtopic.php?f=128&t=7430, and there was a guy named Raphael who ripped my "punk "character and displayed it in that website as his own. I was shocked on how cheap one can get and post my work as his own. I visited his website, and it states that he has worked in many top of the line studios for over 7 years in an executive position. So, I was confused how an experienced artist would plaigiarise artwork. Today, I got the link to another site, and I learned that this is not his first attempt in stealing work, he has done this many times before http://ja.rafi.pl/2010/04/28/rafal-rula-znowu-kradnie/comment-page-1/#comment-53789. I am not sure how to handle this whole issue. Sometimes it makes me laugh at how low people can get , sometimes it just shocks me.

Add me to the list of people in awe at the details of your work. Fantastic work! :)

I'm sorry to hear about your work being stolen. Sometimes people suck. Not sure what you can do beyond being vocal about it and letting admins of any sites it's posted on know etc. If enough people know it's not his work, hopefully he'll not be able to get away with claiming it is his. Maybe you could try have a look around and see how other artists have dealt with this sort of situation? Good luck!

Yes it's true. Rafał Rula (rafaldesign.com in past rula.pl) is well known polish plagiarist. I wrote about him in December, 2008 and after 16 months he came out with another stolen works.

On my way over to the website I see that the user has been banned for Plagiarism. So in some sense the system kind of works. Unfortunately that doesn't mean anything about the guy's personal website. I'm not sure how you an go about taking down the image. Perhaps some claim of copyright? Sorry to hear your work was stolen, however I think that this won't help this person at all since they won't have the actual model to show a potential employer. I mean what good are those 2d images without a turntable render or showreel? The difference here is you have the skills to create something like this, and the person plagiarizing you obviously does not. That's something they can't steal from you.

Keep up the great work!

Thank you guys, for the concern. I am just ignoring the whole issue for the time being.

NR43
05-05-2010, 05:52 AM
That guy won't be doing this for too long.
His reputation will work against him sooner or later.

So you're right to just ignore him.
The other option is to sue him, but that is often not a realistic option for artists.
If you can afford it, I'd say sue his ass off.
It might be more rewarding though to just keep working and creating the great stuff you have been creating :buttrock:

razz
05-05-2010, 09:01 AM
Well, the reality is that he's not getting anywhere by doing this and pretty soon no one will want to work with him. Even if he gets work using other peoples artwork, he just can't do it up to that level, that wouldn't make the client happy, so that's a job lost. And now it's not so much the portfolio but recommendations by the happy clients that get you the job. The guy's lost, it's just a matter of time before no one wants to work with him.

Heozart
05-06-2010, 07:56 AM
