View Full Version : Any tips on how to model rocks?

I need to model realistic looking rocks, but all I keep ending up with are cartoony- looking blobs. I try to shift between smooth and hard surfaces on the rocks, but it just doesn't seem to work out for me... Does anyone have any tips or links to tutorials on how to model realistic rocks? I tried to look for them myself, but turned up empty handed.

Here's what I got so far (the one to the right isn't done)... As I said; useless blobs.

I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for, but I have some rock models I ripped from the games Overlord and Legend. They're fairly low poly, but they might at least give you a starting point (they're game models though, so they're triangulated).

Anyway, I've uploaded them to Rapidshare for you. I wasn't sure what software you're using, so I exported them as .obj files (I threw in some different rock textures for you to play with as well :)). Rock Models (http://rapidshare.de/files/44933171/Rocks.rar.html)

Good luck and I hope this helps.

do you use digital sculpting software? Realistic rocks are pretty quick and easy to create. There was a recent vid tut at Gnomonolgy showing a typical workflow in ZB(but any sculpting app will suffice)

well, if you have zbrush just go crazy with the MalletFast. on stroke for the basic shapes and on spray for the details. if you dont...

http://www.cgtextures.com/ -> tutorials -> recovering detailed normalmaps from textures.

hope that helps :) cheers

Thanks Cubikat. That might give me an idea of what I'm going after.

I use Maya and zBrush. I tried to model the rocks in Maya at first, but went over to zBrush, which didn't help much. But I'll definitely check out Gnomon for that tutorial. Do you by any chance have a link to it, musashidan?

This actually seems to do the trick. I'll have to test it a little more, but the initial feeling when I tried it was; "Holy shit! I'm finally making rocks!" ;) Thanks a lot for suggesting this, divi.

here are 40 odd free stone alphas (http://gnomonology.com/tutorial/114) from gnomonolgy and here is the sculpting a rockface (http://gnomonology.com/tutorial/255) tut which isn't free but is cheap

Best of luck.

There is a script out for maya, it's called rockGen.mel, you can get many different shapes out of it! it's maybe a good starting point, if you have to build a lot!

Thanks gumurki. I tried out the script, but it didn't really do the trick for me though. However I was wondering if you might know of an alternative. I tried to find some scripts myself, and found a few for 3dsmax, but they just wasn't what I was looking for either. Do you know if there are any other Maya scripts out there for creating rocks and such?

I am new at this, so don't mock me... What about a bump map? You could get a low poly, 'smooth(ish) model and do the rest in the map. Just an idea. Maybe not a good one...
