I have some money to spend on some books that I can read to help me during my degree in film and animation. I realy need to know about max script, mel script, and would like other sources of literature for cinematography/lighting and anything else you could feel useful to a wannabe animator in the film industry.

I currently have MEL Scripting for Maya Animators, and am ordering Mathematics for Computer Graphics.

My concern is buying something that is relevant and up-to-date with current versions of software, and takes the reader right from the start and to advanced levels of techniques.

Many thanks to anyone who contributes their opinions on books.

For animation, you have to get 'The Animator's Survival Kit' by Richard Williams. There is also 'Animation' by Preston Blair, 'The Illusion of Life' by Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston. Just to name a few...

I believe Hugo implied it but let me say it outright - do NOT discount books that are all about hand drawn. That's a fact. For a guess - you might even emphasize them.

I can't list any for mel scripting or lighting, but for animation: The Animator's Survival Kit by Richard Williams, Character Animation Crash Course by Eric Goldberg, The Illusion of Life by Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston. Some of the books by Preston Blair are good as well. These books use 2D as the medium but they are no less valuable for 3D. These books teach animation regardless of hand-drawn or CG medium.

For cinematography check out The 5 C's of Cinematography by Joseph Mascelli.
