View Full Version : Cat-modeling
06-30-2003, 01:57 AM
Well, I'm going to start in on misc. items for now. All I can find of the cat is this one:
It looks like a tabby from what I can tell. Kirt, can you give me a bit more in reference since the pic isn't that high of resolution? Thanks!
06-30-2003, 11:59 PM
you are going to make a new record huh?! :D
I think you should leave Kirt and make your Cat based on that tiny sketch, IMO. :p
btw, I want you to share the title 'Modeling Director' with me, please? you deserve it more than me! Kirt?
"Modelling Madman" I say :D
I'll see if I can't get a sketch or two of the cat tonight. Busy night for me at work, but I'll have to take a break or two sometime.

Quite honestly its the beauty of modeling in the LW workflow, with my foundation in the A:M spline based for some reason I took to it alot better than Maya. I like Maya's versatility but you loose something in the workflow, plus Maya's sub-d's are such a pain for me to work with. I'll take the focusing limitation of the single layer of LW's sub's to the many of Maya's. Plus with the great concepts and style that I like that we have here, its easier for me to knock these characters out.
P.S. Ila whatever you feel comfortable with doing, I'm open to contributing.

UMMMM.... Ila. Kirt can we say SUPER MODELER...... To Kenn
07-02-2003, 12:05 AM
Thanks Koinu the compliment is appreciated. I guess its cool when you find something you really like to do. For me its modeling and animation but so far most of my experience is with modeling.
Strange ... I've just found out that I can't draw cats.
*bleah* I'm trying, but so far they all suck.
I'm more of a dog person. :D
07-03-2003, 02:28 AM
LOL! I know the feeling, I've taken the longest time in the past modeling animal rear haunches. I'm hoping I can pull it off this time without it being a major production. No rush, inspiration is a fickle woman.....(waiting for a comment from one of the females :D )

How about some Bill the Cat for some inspiration? With some Opus and Milquetoast contemplating the finer points of life....:D

hehe would be quite cool..but: although it's not up to me, i don't think this cat would fit in with the style, we probably need a more realistic, just a little tooned up, cat.
07-11-2003, 04:24 PM
if you want some cat concepts, i would be happy to do some for you folks
i like drawing cats:blush:
This is the best that I have ...
I'm thinking that maybe it's not to late to substitute the cat with my big-eyed chihuahua (http://www.cell2000.net/~users/kirtstanke/images/0702-beast-of-burden.jpg). Hehehehe :D
07-11-2003, 10:02 PM
AAAHHH, no not the pineapple dress! Hey I'll model whatever you put up there, we can do the chihuahua. I can work with what you have to get here as a start, then we can tweak the 3D form to carry the same style as the rest...k? You let me know what to do for the "pet" model.
No, that was a joke. The cat is needed because he has more weight. It'll be more clear as to why later ...
07-11-2003, 10:56 PM
LOL! those cats ... I thought they are rats! ... :D I assume you never had a cat before, you a dog lover. :scream:
That would be correct ... I'm highly allergic to cats and can find no real use for them except target practice (j/k - to all the cat lovers). I told you my cat drawings sucked. If rikrog or anyone else wants to try designing the cat, that would be fine with me.
The only thing is that it must fit the style of the other characters.

i will do a few concepts based on your current design, try and bring out a little more catness:wip:
07-16-2003, 01:18 PM
Hereís some cat concepts based on a cat i once had called Isaac (RIP). My drawing style is somewhat different to Kirtís, hopefully should fit in with the others once modelled. looking back i prefer the way kirt had its tail with a very bulbous end.
higher- res versions available if required.
hopefully of some help. if you what him tweaked in any way, i would be happy to oblige.

ok this will be the starting point
good points will see my anatomy books also
Uhm ... wasn't this BlueCougar's thread?
If you want to model the cat you're more than welcome to open a new thread to show your progress.
sorry, thought making a good cat was a common objective in a common thread, i will open it when i have someting that worth showing, wait a second if blue cougar it's working on it i can do someting else any thought's...

sorry. deleted. will post elsewhere. just thought as this was long unatended thread...
Here's a couple more sad attempts at drawing a cat. I'm partial to the middle one, but the cat doesn't have to be fat. It can be scrawny like the one on the right.
The important thing is that it should not be unique in it's style. It should blend well with the design of the other characters and not seem out of place.
Although I appreciate rikrog's help with the concepts, I think the designs presented are a different style and the character will stand out (like placing Sid the sloth on the set of Shrek).
Hopefully, someone can make something out of these concepts that I've provided so far. I'll try to do some more, but I'm already sick of trying to draw cats. :argh:

Thanks Kirt. That gives me a bit to work with. I've been messing around with the "Hero" model mesh lately rigging it in LW for the experience. If I come up with anything interesting I'll post it in the Hero thread.
08-19-2003, 06:57 PM
no problem kirt. true, i do have quite a particular style. i'm thinking of modeling my cat concepts, most likely post him in another forum sometime soon.
it will be most interesting to see how the aliens cat come along.
keep on truck'in

Here we go, got some time today to start on the cat model. The first few are shaded wireframes...
08-29-2003, 07:41 PM
here are some more...3/4 with some distortion from focal length of OpenGL cam...
08-29-2003, 07:44 PM
and finally one with some color, just poly's no textures. This is just a rough out. Feedback is welcome, I'll finish roughing out the legs and paws later this weekend once the kids are asleep....
Let me know how it looks compared to your concept Kirt!
I like how the face is shaping up. That looks very close to the concept. The body, back of head and neck needs to be fleshed out some more though. It's still pretty good. Keep going.
08-31-2003, 02:32 AM
The body is just roughed out to get the geometry in place to fill out the cat form. Here is a bit more work to the face to give it more of the qualities in the concept sketch. Does anyone else hear Dom Deluise when they see this cats face? Maybe we can have a spin off after this...lol! Here we go!
I'm going to start roughing out more of the body form and limbs next. I'm filling him out more to be a big tom cat with a bit of weight on him eating the mice and trash around the trailer park. Kirt, do you want me to do the hair on his back and chest like I detailed the head? I thought I would help give you a direction to go on some details once I started in on his form.
08-31-2003, 02:48 AM
Really nice work, the face is looking good. I like the hair coming off its head, gives a nice bit of character. My only real criticism at the moment is there seems to be to much width between the legs on the body. I know you haven't done much work on that part so Its not much of a valid critique. Really nice work so far.
09-01-2003, 04:15 AM
Here's another update with the legs and feet done. Pushed the form about some for the legs and body and going to add hair tufts here and there to give some character to the form.
09-01-2003, 06:33 PM
Labor Day, plenty of time to get stuff done! Added more geometry to the form for "fur" and tufts here and there. The tail still needs some work and I think I'm going to make the paws bigger. Kirt I need you to weigh in on this and tell me what you like and what you don't like. 6 pics in 3 posts.....
09-01-2003, 06:34 PM
09-01-2003, 06:35 PM
He also sorta has a "Cat in the Hat" look to him with the black and white. Alright, let me know what you think about it.
09-01-2003, 07:22 PM
great progress Kenn, i like the hairy treatment.. great way to make it look cartoony, way better than just slapping some fur on the model.. but still, are we gonna use some fur on top of that? kirt?
the belly looks a little weird right now, a bit bumpy, but who am i to crit.. i'm sure you know what you're doing, i'll just wait for the next wip shots
i think he would look cooler if the neck were just a tad thinner
Hmmm ... not sure that I like the roughed-up body. I see what you're trying to do here, but I think the geometry is really getting buggered with this. Won't this cause odd deformations when the model is animated?
I'd go back to the previous smooth body and add only minor tufts of hair on key ponts of the body (chest, back high on spine, and maybe leg joints).
I think we can do more with the hair on this model by painting textures rather than making the mesh complex.
I also think the legs look very fragile compared to the size of his head and body. I wouldn't oversize the feet and legs too much, because he'll start to look like a kitten. However, there is room for some beefing up of the legs.
09-02-2003, 03:58 AM
Can do Kirt, I'll just dial it back to one of the previous versions and tone it down. I have to say I had fun though playing around with bevel and spin-quads to give me the funky surface. I'll have an update up soon.
11-13-2003, 09:02 PM
Alright, first I apologize for not resolving this sooner. Life issues that will soon be resolved as well. I pledge to have this done by the end of the month or Ila can hang me by my toes while covered in honey and release a hungry grizzly on me.
11-13-2003, 10:00 PM
LOL! :D no, I'm not that bad-ass, not a grizzly, how about a blue panther?
this kitty is so awesome Kenn, make it blue.
11-25-2003, 02:25 AM
Okay here is an update. Its been awhile since I've been on this mesh. I kept the simpler look with some tufts but kept the complicated tail. It can be changed back if necessary. Still need internals such as eyes, teeth and tongue. Changed the size of the feet and all as well. Feedback is welcome. I guess no grizzly this time.....whew!
11-25-2003, 02:34 AM
And for Ila here's a blue version.....
11-25-2003, 04:44 AM
miaw!... KoOoL! ...
12-04-2003, 08:07 PM
Disregarding the Blue version, how does the cat look? I apologize for it not being completed sooner, the R/L thing.
12-17-2003, 06:40 PM
If you want my opinion: excellent!
But I think it may need claws, it may have to show them in one moment of the animation or other.
12-29-2003, 02:47 PM
I thought posting here would be as good as any...after Jan 3rd I'll be offline for awhile since I'll be moving. I'll drop a line once I'm back in the virtual world. Later!
