Well how about creating a monotone, easier to guage light and shadow that way, then glaze over the areas with color (especially if coloring digitally). I would start with a medium color background, that way combiing the light and shadow would be abit more dramatic. the blue takes away alot from the piece. There is nothing to balance against it.
would you think an orange type sunset gradient might balance out the blue?

well, I think you got it ok there. I meen, the light is casting normal shadows, and the volumes seem in place.
it just looks all a bit too "smudgy".
I think basically shading is about texture. the type of material you have, will have a certain type of shading. for example, chrome is mostlly about reflection, as for rubber, is all about diffusion of light. Porcelain woud be about specularity. I think you should really look at your skin and see how it reflects the light. is it a sharp light? or a more soft one? what if you skin is wet? the water will make a smother surface, and therefore, a sharper light reflection. that's where you get you information from. for example, a muddy car, like a rally car, only has specutaryty, on the clean parts. not because they are clean, but becaus they are smoother. the dirty parts, ind microscopic terms, are very irregular, thus creating several directions on the light they reflect.
this could be pretty boring to explani by text...
If I have the time, maybe I'll make a couple of examples.
best regards,

Yah, Kazuya, I can se what u mean. It does look pretty "smudgy" now I'm not sure how to add the texture to it without making it look like all there was added was a new layer with a sandstone filter with a mask applied? any suggestion on how to convey the texture along with specular? If anyone has suggestions please dont be affraid to post this questions not only for Kazuya. Thanx for those whom have responded:beer:
