use the draw split tool in the Bonus Games tools on a/w's site. You just hold shift when drawing and it will draw a straight line.

you could also try the split polygons tool (edit polygons -> split polygon tool)

DrawSplit from Maya 5 bonus tool works well.

Isnt the drawsplit tool in maya 5 default, isnt it the split polygon tool

I tried to install the bonus pack but I couldnt get it intalled because I changed the default install location and variables and the directions were not clear on how to do it if those options were changed

drawsplit and split poly are two separate tools. Drawsplit makes it so you just draw like a pen and it just cuts the faces, unlike the split poly where you have to hit an edge one face at a time. Drawsplit is a tool that does what split poly does but 10x faster.

As for installing it. Just copy all the respective files in the directories to the ones in your home directory just like installing any other scripts off highend(scripts into your $home/maya/5.0/scripts folder, etc...).

I am trying to instll it but I can not get the drawsplit tool to work. I am following the instructions here - http://www.aliaswavefront.com/en/Tmpl/Maya/html/index.jhtml?page=/en/Community/Download/plug_ins/maya_bonus_tools.html

I extracted the zip to my maya 5.0 directory not where the actual program is installed. I get the bonus menu with something called face path split tool but I get a error using it sometimes

WHen I put in ' drawSplitTool.mel: ' where you run a script, it says it can not find its job ... When I tyype in ' drawSplitTool:', I get this pen but it does not cut anything

I forgot to mention I set the drawSplit tool to auto load in the preferences too

Finally after restarting several times it now shows up but it works like crap

When I hold shift it does not cut, it seems to draw the line but when I release there is not cut

Also, I can not rotate in the perspecive view when the tool is selected, I have to drop the tool first and then re - select it after I rotate around the object

Is this just me

Use drawSplitTool instead of faceSplitTool.

Open the option box, reset the tool, and there you go.

when it acts up i just reset its options. then it works fine.

Yeah, drawSplit does act up for me as you describe. I think it needs to be fixed. However if you do this it will work fine. To cut a straight line with drawSplit:

Hold Shift and press LMB where you want to cut at the starting point. Then drag your mouse across or down (depending on whether the cut is horizontal or vertical) while still holding the shift. When you have determine where the end point will be, let go of the Shift key and then release the LMB at the point where your cut ends. If you don't release the Shift key before releasing the LMB, it will not create a cut.

And at times if you have trouble with the cut, try reverse the direction flow of the cut: eg. if left to right does not work, try right to left. If up and down does not work, try down and up.

It takes me a while to know this. But drawSplit works as expected for me now. But I think it should be fixed so that it will be more intuitive to use.
