View Full Version : WIP Beer!!!
greekdish 06-29-2003, 08:43 AM Hey all...just wanted to get some early critique on this 3d still Im going to make.....Im not sure...but I think I want to make an empty case of antigue beer bottles....lying dusty in the attic or something, or maybe a new case of beer from the store...not sure yet.....but trying to make the beer first and foremost, and it amazes me how simple Cinema allows me to create a semi-photorealistic image in less than an hour. Any C&C?? :wavey:

Looking good
The only thing I can think of right this instance is that the lighting is a bit off. Looks like you've got the keylight far to close to the bottles - move it a good bit away from them and increase the brightness. And since it is glass, it's always a good idea to have a strong backlight as well.

Very nice! One thing: try to set the specular width to < 1 (0,1 ... 0,5) and the height up to 300 - 400%. It should be a REALLY hard specular highlight.
cheers,
Andreas
Nice work
Maybe add just a smidgeon of noise to the glass to give the specular just a tiny bit of ripple.
Stu.
very nice looks good. make sure to add bottle caps in the finished image nurbs should work for this.
Really nice I think everyone else already cleared up all the major problems.

Looking good. If you're using R8.1 I'd suggest using HDRI reflections in place of the speculars.

Thanks for the C&C's people...Im continuing right now, and will add the touches you all mentioned.

Are there any more tutorials on that website?
Can we access them?

P.S.- Those glasses would look nice next to my beer!!
Twilight- nice but where is the beer lol.
that pic would be really really cool if the beer were like spilling out of it or something.

<tapping fingers waiting for render to complete, 2.2 hours so far and only halfway done, sigh>
ok, i have some free time, obviously, so figured I would post an update text wise, until my render finishes.....I changed the bottle cuz I didnt like it, and now I added the beer inside.....i still need to model the beercap. Anyone have an suggestions for that???
On another note.....is there any way in Cinema to "project curves" on a surface, or wrap a surface on a surface??? I'd like to make the beer label a seperate entity if possible because I want the back of the label a different texture than how it is now, the mirror image of the front. It is a decal mind you, so all you genius's out there speak up!!!! =)
Ill post the update as soon as this render finishes.

question for some people.....Im viewing my images, and whatever else I see in Gamma 1.8......what is everyone else's gamma set to around here??? I checked out my image in PC 2.2 gamma and it looked really dark, and blech.....not what I would want as a final image.....so what is anyone else's gamma set to??

To project a curve across geometry...
- Add the curve (duh)
- Scale it down to the proper size (it must not exceed the height or width of the geometry you wish to project it onto
- Make it editable and select all points
- Right click / Project / select the appropriate plane or 'view'

LOL
maybe i'll add some beer later.
greekdish, i can send you the .c4d file, no problem with that. Just let me know if you want it and give me an e-mail address to send it.

Thanks Twilight...Ill give you full credit of course, as long as you dont mind me filling them up with beer??? :applause:
My email is greekdish@aol.com. That should work unless your file is over 2 megs. Let me know if it is.
Damn, this render is taking forever......over 4 hours right now for about 60%.....640x480 with just ONE bottle. So far its looking better than I thought it would, but sheesh, a 3 Ghz P4 shouldnt take this long to render this one image. Not trying to start another Mac vs PC thread, but for me, I really cant wait for the G5's!!! woot!!! :wip:
For the label make 2 separate tags for the poly area you want,1 for the front and one 1 for the back, then just SLA out the kinks and tweak away the mirror effect :)
Stu.
I seriously think you might want to send dann stubs an email about this render.

Who's Dann Stubbs??? The only Daniel Stubbs I know of was a Miami Hurricanes defensive tackle......is he doing 3d graphics now too?? :curious: LOL
Anyways....I changed my Prefs for rendering, and instead of default Optimized rendering, I changed it to 4 threads. I also changed the Caustics strength from 125 back down to 100. SO now where I got stuck at 6 hours of rendering, this is what I got with 20 minutes. A Huge difference in rendering time. So what C&C can I get for this image??? Thanks in advance.

On its way now.
It's up to you to fill it up!
perfect dude render dude. Loving the whole thing.
dann stubs is the owner of render king which is a render farm. He has a sort of open invitation to people who frequent this forum and have horrendus render times. If you are lucky you can get free rendering using his farm.
But anyway if it only took you 20 minutes, why bother with a render farm.
However 6 hours is really long.

Really good looking.
All you need now is a full scene to put a couple of these in. And the floorplanks are far too narrow compared to the bottle. Usually the base of a beerbottle would easily fit withing the width of one single plank.

I meant the glasses, of course.
I don't know which settings are you using to render that scene, but it shouldn't take more than 5 to 10 minutes to render...
Are you using radiosity? Some tweaking with the radiosity settings can make wonders for the render times.
Keep'em coming!

well, im not sure what kind of tweaks im able to do. Obviously I want it to look a certain way...is there a link to a site that shows optimal settings for raydiosity and caustics?? The caustics really bring out the life in this picture, but also slows the render down to a crawl.
Have you looked at that plugin sinper pro?
It would help a lot with this kind of thing.

Ummm, never heard of it, nor can I find it anywhere. Do you have link??
Also, im my travails to find that plugin, I found Translucent Free from VReel....does anyone know how to use it?? I cant get anything out of it. :thumbsdow
That looks really nice
My only other crit would be the specular is to wide and its chewing up the curvature on the front of the bottle and making it look kind of flat as opposed to curved. That could be lighting and could be as simple as turning off specular on one of your light sources.............hopefully :)

Not a site with the optimal radiosity settings but it might help you better understand each setting.
In your scene i'd use the following settings:
Test Renders:
Strength: 100%
Accuracy: 70%
Prepass Size: 1/1
Diffuse Depth: 1
Stochastic Samples: 300
Min Resolution: 25
Max Resolution: 50
Final Renders:
Strength: 100%
Accuracy: 70%
Prepass Size: 1/1
Diffuse Depth: 3 (maybe not necessary)
Stochastic Samples: 1200
Min Resolution: 100
Max Resolution: 200
But i think you'll get pretty good results with the Test settings... radiosity doesn't have much effect on glass.
translucent free only works in the envoirnment channel using it anywhere else crashes cinema on me.

OK, major stumbling block right now for me....is there anyone here who can help me create a TP Particle EMitter from an objects surface??? I checked out the Tips and Tutorials part of this forum, but its all Chinese to me. (I would say its Greek to me, but Im greek, so then I would understand it. LOL ).....maybe if someone can just create an Object Surface emitter for me, I can swap out what I need then. Any volunteers??
Thanks

Dont know if it just me (Probably is) but there is somthing weard looking with the neck of the bottle.
It looks like the bottle has a liquid in it, filled to the top, but with a part of the liquid missing from the lower half of the bottle.

I'd use 1/2 prepass for test renders
I'd set accuracy to 80%/90%
DD 2/2
Stoch Samples: 100/300
Min 5/15
Max 20/60
The min/max values depend on the scene, might need a lot more.
And in general for the radiosity using a semi-transparent dummy will probably save you time. Check the b/w pic in my gallery for an example.

No, you are correct. Ive seen that since day one. Its a weird glitch that I cannot get rid of, and something I think is in the refraction settings, or maybe a bug in the renderer, I dont know. Its why I havent posted an update in a while as I cant get rid of it.
