View Full Version : How to ?: Game Textures
Ashe Tie'skar 06-29-2003, 06:50 AM How do people make game textures like these? How do they make all the different color variations and blends and such.
I am looking for good start to finish tutorials, better yet videos...
Anyway, i am looking for tips on how people blend colors to make these variations and i am looking how they make the shadows and highlights, and what they put on each layer.
I am only a week or two old to photoshop, so i am looking for anything.
Thanks,

Look on your Photoshop tool palette. You see the Paintbrush/Airbrush tool? Use that ;)

For those kinds of variations, one of my favorite tricks is to use an HSB Adjustment Layer. Just add one, give the sliders a little tweak. With the HSB Ad-Layer mask filled with white, the HSB Ad-Layer will affect the whole graphic. Can't have that. So I'll fill it with black, then paint in the parts that I want affected. Maybe even soften the mask with some Gaussian Blur.
Or add a new Layer, change the blending mode to Overlay or something, and paint on that. Mess with Opactity and junk.
Depending on what I'm painting, I may or may not Merge Down (ctrl + e).
Another thing that has helped me is a method for what colours to use. Check it out: Picking Colours (http://w3.chrlmi.cablespeed.com/~halmich/tech-slop/pickingcolours/index.shtml).
If I find the time later, I'll post a few more thoughts.

Hey, I almost forget that DarkGarden is the man.
Painting Eyes (http://faq.ozoneasylum.com/162/rating/)
That should keep you busy for awhile.

Oh I forgot to mention that the Dodge, Burn, and Sponge tools are fantastic for creating variations as well :)

I think i found somewhat of what i was missing.... The brushes... I would read stuff about hard edge and soft edge and all this and that, but I wasn't understanding it. Anyway, i think i am looking for soft edge brushes and things like that....
Are there Gradient brushes out there?
Thanks for the help everyone...
If anyone knows where i can download some good brush sets that would be cool! Thanks!

Open the Brushes palette. Click on the > arrow at the top right. Load new brushes. There are a few sets right there. And all the options are there in the palette to customize them to your own tastes.
To quickly change to harder/softer, use Ctrl [ and Ctrl ].

here is something that will you help get a head start.....painting from scratch on a UV map for a low poly character is a bit blind at times so using a baked lighting can really spice things up very quickly.
