Hello all,
I'm am a bit of a budding digital artist. Started classes recently and I am loving every second of it. But I now find myself a bit stuck. I have a class assignment to model a jellyfish. I have done the class project but now I kind of want to go above and beyond and model my own and I really want to model something similiar to

http://etc.usf.edu/clipart/7300/7313/jellyfish_7313.htm

But I can not for the life of me think of a way to model those frills in the center of the jellyfish. I am using maya 8.5 to model these. Also as the title states I am very new so please forgive me if this is one of those terribly dumb questions.

a pointer to a tutorial or something like that would be greatly apprectiated, or any help you can offer would really be wonderful.

Sorry if im posting in the wrong area too, also new to the site

It's been a while since I've worked with Maya (been working with 3DS Max because of work) but I'm thinking extruding along a path or creating the shape with NURBS going sideways between two NURBS splines?

Just a thought.
