The movement on the toy looked great. The camera made me a bit dizzy though. Good job

Thanks Michael! We debated smoothing the camera out - or recording a camera pass with more elegant motion, decided to leave it as is for the amateur "handy cam" feel we were going for.

To be clear, a little on the tech:

The entire render and scene is CG; no practical elements, still photos were taken of my office to map on the backgrounds. "Stuff" was hand animated.

The camera movement was done "live" on our stage. The finished ninja animation was shrunk to the size of a table top and played back for "filming". We tracked our cameraman with a handheld virtual camera/viewfinder following all the action in real-time, all in the virtual world we created. Live virtual worlds/pre-viz is one of the services and tech we offer.

The Ninja motion is very much the performance of our talented actor, just alot of detail edititng/keyframing of exact hand postions and fingers, and a few tricks I had up my sleeve. ;).

Ha! Thanks, that was definitely one of the things we were thinking of and looked at for inspiration. Those were great, I really liked him using the remote to have the robot take out the camera....

Maybe you should've mocapped the camera as well? :P It was really moving a lot, kind of distracting. Great character movements!

Thanks for the compliment and critique! To clarify what I alluded to earlier, yes the camera was motion captured - at the scale of actually looking at the toy on the table. You can see an example of it in the credits.

We were going for an amateurish home video look, the unsuspecting camera person surprised by the toy coming to life. We debated smoothing out the movement a bit, or capturing more elegant camera work, but decided to use the sloppy/amateur feel. Hopefully it wasn't too distracting. :)

Thanks for the comments!

P.S. If you want to see more of the Ninja animation (no shaky camera;)), check out our current montage reel:

The dude is off-the-hook with the way he handles the staff and does a cartwheel too!
