View Full Version : Multiple Maps per Character?

To all:

This might be an ignorant question, but on a professional level, do you use multiple maps for one character, or just one UV map. For example, do you have a map for the head, and then one for the torso, one for the arms.... I'm assuming you only use one and then just increase the resolution and size of the map. Just curious.

Depends on your profession. :)

Game CG artists use fewer numbers of textures, for memory and performance issues.

TV, film and illustration CG artists generally use more textures because it is easier than having to deal with the constraints of image-packing. Easier to paint. Easier to edit. Easier to share amongst a team. Easier to UV. Easier to re-use. Better memory management with network rendering (one big texture is more of a resource hog than many smaller chunks). Etc.
