View Full Version : Bournemouth University MA/PD or Computer Science Degree?

Hi I’m recently going to further my studies and I’m trying to choose between

Bournemouth University Digital Effects MA/PD and

University of Wollongong Bachelor of Computer Science (Multimedia & Game Development)



I’m currently working in a Post production house as a 3D generalist http://adamleecg.com/AdamLee_Reel08.mov . I’m hoping to go more into doing visual effects and have been learning scripting on my own.



Should I take a general Computer Science Degree to gain a better programming foundation or should I go for Bournemouth University Digital Effects ?



And is it true that I can enter Bournemouth University Masters Degree based on my job experience and portfolio even though I don’t have a bachelor degree?

Can anyone advise me on this? Thanks in advance for any replies!

Hi Adam,

Bournemouth has a good reputation, and I completed an MA (not at Bournemouth) without a degree first, although I had some further education and work experience. So Im sure on that front you would be fine.

Looking at your resume though, if you are already a senior 3d artist I personally wouldnt recommend going back to education, and certainly not on 3 year degree course. You will end up paying high fees and probably wont be taught anything you dont already know.

In my opinion, somewhere specialist like Escape Studios might be an answer if you want to learn some more advanced skills. Above all I would stay in work, because its ten times harder to get back into it once youre out.

Thanks for the reply. I must agree that staying in the industry is very important. I forgot to mention that the Bachelor of Computer Science is a part time course and I will continue my job if I take it.

It seems that most Visual Effects Artist position requires or prefers a Comp Science Degree on the other hand a MA at Bournemouth will definately get more overseas job opportunities.
