View Full Version : Working on my drawing skills

I've never really considered myself to be a very good drawer (looks wrong so... sp?) so I decided to take out my tablet and just sketch random things.

This first started off as a single white line, which i slowly added 'fire' and 'smoke' to, until I ended up with this.

I wouldn't mind some C&C, because I am still learning what I'm good at and what I need to work on. Also, if anyone has any good practice sketch ideas that I might be able to do to work on different things (landscapes has always been something I've wanted to draw) that would be greatly appreciated. Also, any nice and easy things to sketch with a subject (photograph) would also be appreciated.

Overall, it's nothing to write home about. It's just a bunch of lines. Doesn't look like smoke, doesn't look like anything more than a bunch of lines...

Perhaps take this bunch of lines, duplicate it, and add another layer. This time, pick a weird brush shape, and choose a darker shade of gray, and make some shorter, geometric strokes, a small square, triangle, and circle on it somewhere. Make sure they're all touching.

Now take a lighter shade of gray, pick another brush, and place one or two light strokes to give an intimation of a light source.

Duplicate this, flip it horizontally, change the mode to overlay or soft light, and move it around a bit. Hopefully you are seeing something that you can then continue painting on, turning this into something more than just a bunch of lines.

Don't get me wrong. It's a GREAT start. It's just nothing at this stage. You've made the first step and done SOMETHING, now you need to take that momentum and actully make something for us to look at...

It's fun to draw on the tablet, isn't it? I still can't say that I am completely comfortable with it as opposed to traditional media, but I can say I'm getting there.

This link may help get your motor skills more refined.

The only other thing I would say is to practice sketching each day. save your sketches no matter how poor you think them to be. you will get better and it will be nice to look back see how much you have progressed.

Why should anyone said you're stupid? If someone can't draw, is stupid? But i know what you mean. There are people who coment like that.
Ignore coments like that, because "you are stupid", "you can't draw", "you suck" aren't critics at all and artist who know what art is, won't comment like that because they were all the same in begining.

But stay critic to yourself. Keep CybrGfx's signature in your head which says Never settle for "good enough," until you can honestly say you tried your best.

Yeah people can be quite annoying to new members of forums lol.

Well, just started a new sketch, so far its just a simple sword design. Also, the skull was my first ever drawing with the tablet, which I got last Christmas. I used a reference, but I think I MIGHT have traced parts of it. Its been awhile >_<

EDIT: Now that I think of it, I think I traced a good portion of it. I just wanted something to test the tablet.

Any comments, as always, are welcome :-)
