View Full Version : Ik question
=LuxX= 01-30-2009, 10:05 AM Hello boys and girls
I have a problem. the biggest problem is im not good at rigging so maby the awnser is verry easy.
I made a small rig for something to collaps.
as you can see in the picture there are just 3 joints from 1 to the start of 3 there is an normal IK handle. Then from the start of joint 2 to the end of joint 3 there is an Ik handle with a sticky end. Because this has to stay in place.
when i move the top IK up and down it looks great!.. BUT.. when i put a key on that IK handle and scroll furhter in the time line and key again then it messes up.. this is undoable.
PLeaaase... help me.

I'm a little confused about what it is you're trying to do, but what I think is going on is Maya is getting confused because you have two IK handles trying to control the same points. For starters, I would just suggest not having overlapping IK influence.
If you need to leave them crossed over for some reason, one thing you could try it create a locator, point snap it to the IK handle you need to stay in place and then Point Constraint the IK handle to that Locator. That might do it, but again, it might move when the second IK handle attempts to reposition that joint (thus moving the IK handle to stick to the joint still)
Another option might be to use a Spline IK. Then put clusters on each of the spline CVs and animate the spline via the clusters to drive the joints. That might do what you're trying to pull off, but I don't particularly understand your end goal with your rig, so it's just a suggestion in this case.

I had a similar problem when I was starting out with rigging. And I learned that that never set keys directly on IK handle because it will snap to its goal joint or goal joint snapping to ik handle when you move manually or set a key. And yes it will be undoable. Because once you set a key IK handle will solve the joint positions and joints will settle into their goals. So when you undo IKsolver comes to the same solution and nothing changes. Only your key is gone.
In your case one IK handle is affecting other ik solver's goal joint and that ik handle is affecting middle joint of end ik handle (I hope this makes sense). So the results will be unpredictable unless there is a constraint system (which I doubt is possible) that do not allow such situation.
I hope that helps. I am just curious what kind of rig are you doing which needs two overlapping IK?

well thnx
I dont realy understand it but i know its hard to do ..
Hmm maby i just make it a driven key. because that is the only way it will bend.
I am sorry but i cant say what it is for because its going to be made for the comapny and will be the first one in the world to have this. ( its a superstructure ;) ) so company rulez..
