View Full Version : Cinematic Game Icons - Character - BinarySoup
BinarySoup 06-28-2003, 04:59 AM ok, I'm the late runner I guess, but due (or thanks) to botched vacation plans, I have all the time in the world (well, 24 hours a day atleast), to create something for this competition. Anyway, I was inspired by Bachelorette's superb 8 characters for 8 versions, after seeing those I wanted to try my hand at modeling something in a Manga style, which I hope I will succeed at.
Allright, so now, after about 1 hour of fiddling in photoshop with my wacom, I have atleast enough concept drawings to get started on modeling the face, more will follow. no game plot as of yet, only thing I've decided on is that the main character is a Valkyrie, and that the setting is in a dark version of Valhall, ok here's the few concepts that turned into something useable, trust me, you do NOT want to see those I discarded... thankfully, I believe I'm a better modeler than I am a concept artist...

the reason I post these two different concepts is because I was happy with the eyes on the first, but the rest was too much 'western' in style, as for the second, I was happy with the manga look, nose, mouth very centeralized in face, but I made the eyes too diagonal, so I'll try to model the eyes of the first concept with the overall face of the second.
ok, now I'm off to modelling and cough up some wacky manga-like storyline.

yeehaa, first update, ok, being a detail-out modeler, I usually start with a detailed area and then work my way out, and when modeling faces I start with the eyes, just as I do when drawing. anyway, here is the current status of the eye, it's not quite there yet, but it's good enough for now.

off to work on the nose.

ok, got the nose up and running (hehe), well far from finished, had major problem on deciding wheter or not to have nostrils. Usually in manga art nostrils are left out, but when I modeled the nose first without nostrils, it just didn't look right. then I added nostrils and now it looks better, but perhaps though not as 'manga' as I would like it. I will have a look at this again when I have finished more of the face, gonna tweak the nose a bit, then the mouth and then do some temporary eyes.

not alot of modeling done on this update, mostly tweaking on eyes, nose. added eyeballs and colored them, due to the 'manga' look on the eyes, I had to widen the eyeballs considerably in order to make them fit nicely, so they're not exactly 'balls' anymore, but it looks ok. not happy with the upper lip yet, thats why I haven't started on the lower lip.

also, I found some great websites on norse mythology on the web, so I'll throw together a cool game plot in a post or two, the game itself is a action/adventure in the 3D Zelda mold. You play as the last Valkyrie, and your goal is to bring down Odin who has gone evil, and is killing all the other gods in Valhall.

starting to get somewhere, mouth looks ok for now, made nose smaller and centralized everything in the face to get more manga-like look. continued to build the face out on the sides, still alot to do, face isn't very smooth and forehead is too protruding, ect etc, still enough done on it for me to take a break from it for a while and start figuring out how the helmet should look. also need to do some concept art for the body.

now that I've actually gotten somewhere I'd love to hear some comments :D

Hi there @BinarySoup, wlcome to the chalange,
i like the manga concept, the lower image, as for the modeling everything is going realy ok. but in my opinion the face looks less manga style now, she has quite small eyes and a bit to long face as for manga characters maybe try to focus on the lower image concept wich is more expressive and fits the goal- but thats only me so you ll do your way anyway :)
Keep on going good:thumbsup:

you're definately right, in it's current state, the face is 99% the first concept, and that was the least manga-like of them. later I'm going to move down the eyes a bit more, and also make them slightly bigger, also I'm not happy with the cheeks and chin. however, I've been working on this face for 4 hours straight, so I have likely lost my objective eye. at this point it's better to do something else, and apart from sleeping a couple of hours which is next on my list, I need to try out some ideas for the helmet, sketch on a body, and contemplate some interesting game plot (something to ponder while counting sheeps perhaps)...
thanks for the comment!
