Girn26 06-28-2003, 01:35 AM Ok, whenever im making a skin for a model, I always use the pen tool and make some objects but after I do that. It wont allow me to use burn tool or dodge tool or any other type of tools. So I end up saying the psd to jpg then opening it back up in jpg format so I can edit it. But after continious amount of times doing this on the skin, it ends up looking very bad quality for some odd reason. Now im wondering, how can I fix it so I can use those tools on my newly made objects with pen tool without having to go through the psd-jpeg conversion? And making it turn bad quality. thx

First of all, always save an un-flattened PSD file!!
Can't stress this enough.
When you want to use it on a model, then export it to a different format.
Second, you can't really paint on a custom shape layer. I'm assuming that is what you are using. If you want to use custom shapes for your bits-n-pieces, then you will have to clip a rastor layer to it. Then paint on the rastor layer. Or you could rastorize the custom shape and turn on preserve transparency.

There's another way around for still having the vector and being able to perform all the normal stuff you would do with a layer. It's quite simple and it's pretty much the same what Stroker mentioned, but you only work with one layer so you don't have so much clutter. Create a layer on which you gonna paint, then hold Ctrl and click on the mask button (second from the left) in the Layers window. A vector mask will be created. Now you can make your vector work and paint on one layer. This of course can be applied to Adjustments layers as well.
Hope that helps.

Yeah, vector mask.
Forgot about those.
Kudos.
