I know polytrans can do it, but any free converters out there?

PolyTrans is a plugin to MAX for exporting from Max and importing to Max formats not native to Max. You must have Max before buying PolyTrans.

Answer to your question: No.

Three (legal) ways to open a Max file:
1- Buy Max
2- Buy Viz
3- Use a Demo, or a friend with Max.

Same goes for Maya BTW. I had the same problem; then found a friend with Maya to translate files for me.

For Max translations I bought Viz. Three years later they want me to pay full price again to upgrade to v.4. So instead I use the Max 5 Demo in Virtual PC on my Mac- works just fine.

I am thinking about switching from PC to a Mac G5 (When they come out). I own 3DS MAX 4.2 and want to know if virtual PC actually works well?

There's nothing wrong with VirtualPC, but you're in for a performance hit. Firstly, the emulation takes away a lot of your power. Secondly, your videocard isn't used (as far as I remember). And as Max really needs that videocard (as does any other 3D-anim solution), you will probably be dissapointed.

Try using other Mac-based software. There are at least 4 pro-packages on the Mac - C4D, Maya, LightWave, EI Universe.

BaRa is correct. VPC was never intended to replace a real pc. Just to make it easier to do a pc task on one machine. But it is an emulator so it will always be slower than a real pc.

Translating files from MAX to obj is easy. But doing an animation or a complex scene in VPC would be insane.

Also, AutoDesk/Discreet have developed Max and Viz specifically for the Intel chipset. They have no intention of supporting any other chip. (At this time). So if you want to continue to use Max you will need an Intel (or at least a fast AMD) box.

For Cinema and Lightwave... that's an entirely different story.

Why you thinking of going down the mac route, if I may ask? I was thinking of adding a Mac to my studio just for the fun of it (not that I would buy a one for that reason, I have a friend who is getting rid of his old imac). As an old Amiga addict, I long for a machine I feel I can belong to. It sounds silly, but emotion is a big part of this techie world. I have liked Linux for getting back to this community feeling, even though it is more demanding.
