For those of you that were asking not too long ago, the answer is yes. Half-life2 will come with a light-version of softimage|xsi. At least that is what this article says...

holy shit!

is it possible to use this "light" versions on render slaves?

I'll buy a bunch of half-life-packages then... hehehe

That's rockin' good news!

Wonder if it will be kinda the same idea as discreet's gmax, only better.

Really, the only bad news about all of this is the fact Half-Life 2 is coming out (not to mention Doom III as well). This means a system upgrade again to play it:hmm:

Dude, you're kidding, right? Like if the Softimage people didn't think about that....

so the gossip is true

mental ray is already realtime, mental images is only playing with the delay-values encoded in it's render engine

"oh, is the latest brazil out? lets decrease the delay-value"

I believe that They will MOST likely have some sort of dimenish to the renderengine as they do in Gmax, but if u know your half-life History you know that Milkshape was developed to model for half-life and read the propertory model format and let you export to various render programs. Thus People were still able to render their Models in a nice none watermarked (eww) fasion to show off to their friends family and stranger on the street. I Do hope that the ability to render a NICE high quality midlevel resolution is not lost with this XSI Lite.

hmm I think you got it wrong. What Jaco meant is that gaming is realtime stuff, while mr is not. So why would you need mr?

half-life uses source to render its graphics. hey THAT Would be really kool, if in this "XSI Lite" you could run the game engine for a render, so like setup a basic scene and render your model in it with the game engine!! (without going into game, and in the render region)

well the thread had a quite lighthearted spirit, that was the tone of my post as well :)

actually gamedev has lots of use for MRay since baking radiosity, ambient occlusion, multiple maps and other things to vertex colors and rendermaps is very common in many pipelines.

but for modders it sure wouldn't be priority #1

XSI EXP -MRay -dynamics +HL2export would prolly be the best tradeoff

what i was thinking was more of an implimentation of the Source Real Time engine into this "XSI" lite for us to render out pretty images of our models without any water mark, that however would also make the program unuseful for high grade animations, keeping those would would wish to rip off the industry.
