Search cgtalk, couldn't find anything pertaining to this:

what is the best way to model a car?

part by part or as a whole?

can you get the same effect both ways?

Either way works. I tend to model it as 1 object, then detach the windows doors etc. A great time saver for the thickness of the panels is "Solidify" I think you can get it at scriptspot.

I really do suggest spline cage modelling the whole thing as one piece, but if you want to do piece by piece it's still okay but i think it's a bit more tricky to get the pieces to line up, and if u choose that method make sure to only do it in "Panels" as in the real car other wise it screw up totally i did that w/ my mclaren
u could also use patches but i don't like that method it's too sloppy when i do it

do NOT use patches .. i modeled my first car w/ patches and it was a horrible, horrible experience

i think it's best to stick with what you know best...

if you are a wiz with spline-cages, then use that, if you are a wiz with polys then use that, etc. if you are a newb, then pick one and give it a try, be know that your first serious car (and maybe second as well) model will probably suck, as it takes a while to get really comfortable with either toolset.

but really cars can be made either way:
